It took one conference game for all the Ole Miss haters and doubters (of which there are many) to come out of the woodwork hollering about the Rebels being a fake good team.
Maybe Ole Miss (13-1, 0-1 SEC) just ran into a buzzsaw in Knoxville with the No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers, but fans won’t know until there’s more SEC games in the record books. Wednesday’s game against the very capable Florida Gators (10-4, 0-1 SEC) should be the most challenging home game since the top 25 Memphis Tigers visited the SJB Pavilion in early December.
Florida has five players averaging double digits, which should present a defensive challenge for the Rebels. Ole Miss is coming off its worst defensive performance of the season giving up 90 points to Tennessee, and it was the first time since Chris Beard’s tenure at Little Rock for one of his teams to give up 90 points.
The Rebels have slowly brought along transfers Moussa Cisse and Brandon Murray with Cisse becoming a great defensive option and Murray starting to pitch in offensively. For the season, Ole Miss is led by Matthew Murrell and Allen Flanigan with 16 points per game each though Jaemyn Brakefield was the leading scorer in the only conference game thus far.
Ole Miss has played its best basketball when it is in the lead, so if the Rebels can get out to an early lead, a top 50 NET ranking win becomes a possibility.
