Ole Miss continues to add to a deep and talented defensive line class with the weekend commitment of Albany, GA pass rusher Maurice Davis. Davis is listed at a rangy 6’5, 210 lbs, and chose Ole Miss over a strong push from Louisville. The EDGE prospect also had offers from Texas A&M, Cincinnati, USF, and others.

Looking at Davis’ junior season Hudl highlights, I see a player who is as long and athletic as his measurements suggest. He looks super quick for 6’5, showing good burst off the line when rushing the quarterback, as well as good speed in space chasing ball carriers. He does appear to lack technique and body control at times, and doesn’t appear to be the most natural tackler. Still, he appears to have a lot of room to grow as a player, and his raw talent is apparent.

In a recent recruiting roundup, I mentioned Davis as a prospect that appeared to be on the verge of committing to the Rebs, and highlighted how his recruitment, along with that of fellow three-star pass rusher Cameron Clark, appears to be a departure from Lane Kiffin’s previous Ole Miss classes. The NIL cost to land blue-chip players, both in high school and in the portal, is spiraling ever-upwards, and schools like Ole Miss will quickly run into trouble trying to match the highest offer for every prospect they’re in on. It makes sense to build out a solid foundation with guys like Davis and Clark, who have the frame and potential to be solid P5 starters, but lack the recruiting hype to demand inflated NIL deals.

Davis is already the fifth defensive line commit for the Rebels’ 2024 class, joining Mississippi blue chips Jeffery Rush and Kamron Beavers, in-state defensive tackle William Echoles (listed as an offensive guard, but recruited by Ole Miss as a DL), and the aforementioned Cameron Clark, from South Gibson County HS in Medina, TN.
