We like easy wins, don’t we folks?
Well, we got one Friday night as Ole Miss picked up a game one win over Belmont 12-4. The rest of the weekend, however, involved sweating and anxiety.
The Rebels picked up a sweep over the Bruins by final scores of 12-4, 4-3 and 8-7 over the weekend, and the last two didn’t come very easily. Belmont jumped out to a lead in both Saturday and Sunday’s games, but the Rebels fought back with some clutch hitting by way of the long ball to secure the wins. Kevin Graham was the hero in Saturday’s game as his solo shot in the eighth gave the Rebels their first lead of the day en route to the victory. Tim Elko also has hit five home runs in his last five games, including two on Sunday, that make him one of the hottest hitters in the Ole Miss lineup.
Elko hit a three-run shot that put Ole Miss up 7-4 in Sunday’s game, but the bullpen imploded for the first time this season in the top of the ninth, allowing Belmont to tie the game at seven before an RBI single from Hayden Dunhurst gave the Rebs the walk-off win in the bottom half.
This is the second weekend in a row that the Rebels have had to play without Peyton Chatagnier, and his absence from the lineup is evident thus far. He may only be a sophomore, but his energy and plate presence is a key factor in Ole Miss’ success. Thankfully, he should be back for conference play, and the sooner he returns, the better imo.
A sweep is a sweep obviously, and it was good for Ole Miss to go undefeated this week following the series loss to UCF, even if it was against some inferior opponents. Still, this team hasn’t reached its full potential yet in my opinion, and we’ll have to see if they keep this hot streak up as we draw nearer to SEC play.
They’ll have the opportunity to do so this upcoming week as they play host to Alcorn State in the midweek and Louisiana-Monroe in the weekend. Those games will be broadcast on SEC Network +.
