Former Ole Miss softball legend Kylan Becker is joining Athletes Unlimited’s professional softball league, a unique women’s sports venture that will begin in August.
Becker, who became the first player in Rebel history to be selected to the United States National Team in 2018, was dominant in her time in Oxford. Becker ranks top-10 in school history in batting average, hits, triples, RBIs, runs, walks, total bases, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, steals, fielding percentage, games played and games started. After she became the Rebels’ first-ever All-SEC selection as a sophomore, the 5-foot-9 outfielder received the same recognition as a junior and put together one of the best single seasons across all Ole Miss athletics as a senior.
Over 197 at-bats in 2019, Becker led the SEC with 84 hits (.426) and only 12 strikeouts. She also broke the Ole Miss single-season records for runs (55), triples (9) and stolen bases (34).
While her prowess at the plate speaks for itself, what Becker did best was in the field. As a large part in Ole Miss’ four consecutive NCAA regional appearances, her ability to track down fly balls is uncanny.
Her robberies were so consistently amazing that she found herself in the top spot of SportsCenter’s top-10 twice in 2019.
The second catch helped secure a victory in the Oxford that sent the Rebels to its second Super Regional appearance in four years.
Add in her killer cannon and she is pretty much unstoppable anywhere on the diamond.
When Becker’s collegiate career came to a close, she signed a professional contract with Scrap Yard Fast Pitch, a professional independent women’s softball team out of Conroe, Texas and then returned to Oxford as a student assistant in the fall before she graduated in December. When the coaching staff saw sudden changeover and Ruben Felix was named interim head coach, he brought Becker on full-time as a volunteer assistant coach.
No. 15 had her first season on the staff cut short, but her professional career is scheduled to continue over the summer. Athletes Unlimited, an organization that looks to revolutionize professional women’s sports, would kick off with softball this August and offer players an opportunity to earn roughly $35,000 in its inaugural season.
The league’s inaugural six-week season will be held at Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Ill. and start on Aug. 17, following the conclusion of the 2020 National Pro Fastpitch season. The league will reportedly split $1 million in compensation between its 56 players, offering a base salary and bonuses based on a scoring system that allows the players to earn points on every play.
Athletes Unlimited’s unique model will eliminate team owners, general managers and the traditional fixed-team format and will consist of three games each week for all four of the league’s teams, with teams being redrafted by the highest performing players every week.
Becker has announced that she will join the league alongside several professional players and college standouts like Samantha Show, Kelly Barnhill, Caleigh Clifton, Emily Crane, Sara Groenewegen, Victoria Hayward, Abby Ramirez, Jade Rhodes, Randi Rupp, DJ Sanders, A.J. Andrews, Gwen Svekis and Haylie Wagner.
Oklahoma State's Samantha Show Gives Us Another Glorious Bat Flip
We're not sure if Oklahoma State Cowgirl Softball's Samantha Show hit us with a bat spike or a bat tomahawk. Either way, we're here for it. https://atmlb.com/2XcowAmPosted by Cut4 on Thursday, May 30, 2019
Having some of the nation’s best softball players compete against fresh lineups and new faces each week will be electric, and having No. 15 back on the field making unbelievable plays makes it that much more fun!
