Grab the kids, load up in the four wheel drive, and get ready for a whole mess of hot dog sandwiches and baseball.
The No. 15 Ole Miss Rebels baseball team welcomes Alcorn State into Swayze Field this afternoon with a chance to win its third straight game. The Rebels (2-1) just took a weekend series from then-ranked No. 1 Louisville.
Looking at the series history, Ole Miss and Alcorn State have yet to meet on the baseball field, so this is history happening, folks! The Rebels do boast a 27-1 all-time record against teams from the SWAC.
Our very large and hungry 1B son Cael Baker is coming off SEC Player of the Week honors and Golden Spikes Award Performance of the Week after hitting .417 in the first three games including two home runs and five runs batted in. In these mid-week games against less than competitive programs, I would expect Baker to either be pitched around or absolutely rake, at least early on.
Taking the mound for Alcorn State is the ever dangerous TBA, so we’ll have to keep an eye out for that prior to first pitch.
Senior pitcher Greer Holston will be making his first start since 2017 after a 2019 campaign that was shut down due to a dead arm and no reported injury. Holston made only one appearance in relief last season against Mississippi St. with less than one inning pitched, but he went 2-3 with a 5.27 ERA with eight starts in 2017 followed up by a 2-1 record and 3.27 ERA in 2018 out of the bullpen.
Today’s game is the debut game for $1 hot dogs at concession stands and kids get in free for Ole Miss baseball. Temperatures are expected in the low 50’s, so you’re not going to want to grill out. Get a few, cheap hot dog sandwiches, a cold one, and show the kids what America is all about - fire up the nostalgia and patriotism.
