3-star WR JJ Henry commits to Ole Miss over Baylor, Florida State, and Texas

WRU adds another.

The Ole Miss Rebels saw two of their wide receivers leave the committed column earlier in the cycle. Now, Derrick Nix and the 2021 class has added one back with the verbal commitment of three-star JJ Henry.

The 76th-ranked player in Texas chose Lane Kiffin’s program over notable offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Colorado, Florida State, Indiana, Minnesota, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, and Utah among others.

The McKinney North High School prospect exploded on the recruiting scene after a junior season where the Bulldogs finished 10-2 and Henry made 71 catches for 1,419 yards and 16 touchdowns. As a senior, Henry hauled in 40 receptions for 739 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Henry joins four-star Bralon Brown and fellow three-star Brandon Buckhaulter in Nix’s 2021 receiver class.

How does he fit in?

The 5-foot-10, 165-pounder makes up for what he lacks in elite measurables with elite route-running and speed. The 2019 District 7-5A-I Co-Offensive MVP seems to be the heir apparent to Elijah Moore in the slot for Jeff Lebby with his skill set and ability to get open all over the field. Much like Ole Miss’ Biletnikoff Award nominee, JJ has a knack for slipping behind the defense and embarrassing defensive coordinators with superb cuts and home run speed.

Despite being a little light, I anticipate Henry to be in the thick of things when it comes to 2021’s two-deep at slot receiver. He’s also a weapon in the return game, gathering up chunks of yards in kick and punt returns. I, personally, like this pick up for Ole Miss and think he’s certainly going to be a weapon in Oxford for years to come.
