Ole Miss basketball is playing its second game in three days as part of a torrid start to the season where the Rebels play four games in the first week.
The Rebels (1-0) will face UNC-Wilmington (3-2) in the friendly confines of the Pavilion on the Ole Miss campus. The Seahawks won its last game over St. Andrews 116-66, but it dropped games against Western Carolina and East Carolina earlier this season.
Ole Miss dominated in its first game of the season against Jackson State winning by 35 points (80-45) and only allowed the Tigers to score 12 points in the first half. The first impression of this revamped roster is vintage Kermit Davis kind of team - defensive minded, fundamental basketball, and depth to allow 10-12 players on the court every game.
Devontae Shuler dropped 23 points on 9 of 10 shooting from the field against JSU. Shuler also did not miss a single three pointer, going five for five. According to my extensive calculations, that is 100 percent and seems pretty good.
The Rebels also saw debuts from six transfers or freshmen with Arizona St. transfer Romello White shining the brightest with eight points, six rebounds and two blocks in only 20 minutes on the court.
If the Rebels are to get to 2-0, the team will need another strong outing defensively especially putting a stronghold on 6’6” guard Jaylen Sims who leads the team in scoring and fifth nationally with 27 points per game. Sims led UNCW in scoring last year as a sophomore, and in an SEC contest against Vanderbilt, scored 19 points. The kid can score, and Ole Miss just needs to limit him where they can to ensure he doesn’t inspire the team to an upset.
