Well…it’s been a while.
Primed for a strong Spring 2020, the season was cancelled thanks to some infectious disease that I have heard something or another about over the course of the last few months, but I can’t quite remember for sure. Anyway, OUR SONS have weathered the pandemic storm and are ready to actually tee the golf ball up in an actual tournament this week. The powers that be have come up with a gameplan to play a limited number of Fall events in geographically convenient areas.
The first of those limited events takes place in Fayetteville this Monday through Wednesday at Blessings Golf Club. Both the Ole Miss Men’s and Women’s teams will make the trip and compete against an all-SEC field that will be broadcast live on the Golf Channel.
This Week’s Tournament: Blessings Collegiate Invitational
When: October 5-7
Where: Fayetteville, Ark.
The Course: Blessings Golf Club
The Sanderson PGA event in Jackson prides itself as being the most chicken-centric event in golf…that is until this event was put together for the Fall. Blessings is literally owned by chicken. John Tyson of Tyson Chicken fame built the Blessings as a premier golf destination in Northwest Arkansas. The site of the 2019 NCAA Championships violent elevation changes and multi-tiered green complexes will make for a challenging first event for everyone.
The 44th-ranked Rebels:
Jackson Suber (Jr., Tampa, Fla.): Spent his time off relaxing, spending time in personal reflection and also setting a new course record at the Ole Miss Golf Course when he shot a screaming 61 a few weeks ago. Also made it to the match play round of the US Am at Bandon Dunes over the summer. Decent.
Sarut Vongchaisit (Jr., Bangkok, Thailand): Had two Top-10 and four Top-25 finishes in his Sophomore season before everything was cancelled. Steady team performer that should continue the trend in his Junior campaign.
Cecil Wegener (Sr., Jackson, Miss.): Lil Precious is back! After sitting out last season due to double hip surgery, Wegener is back and looks to continue to lead the team as its best returning Senior.
Veeti Mahonen (Soph, Kirkkonummi, Finland): Showed out early during the Fall of his Freshmen season. Has a Top-10 finish in Hawaii and placed 7th in scoring among all SEC freshmen.
Brett Schell (Redshirt Fr., St. Augustine, Fla.): The big Floridian makes his first appearance on the Rebel’s traveling team.
The Field: The SEC. Like, everybody.
The top individuals who will be playing for second: Ricky Castillo — Florida, John Augenstein — Vandy, Trent Phillips — UGA, Phillip Barbara — LSU, Davis Thompson — UGA, Walker Lee — A&M, Wilson Furr — Alabama, Hunter Wolcott — Tenn
Where to follow: Golfstat and Ole Miss Golf Twitter are your go to online sources to follow the action. The tournament will also be broadcast on the Golf Channel at 2:30pm and 6:30pm CDT each day. Annnnnd, your boy got a pass and will be out there for a couple of the days as your on-course reporter, so check the ol’ Twitter account for some updates, photos, etc.
Next Up: Legends Collegiate Invitational, Franklin, Tenn., Oct. 25-27
