Kermit Davis and the Ole Miss Rebels are reeling coming off a ten-point road loss to Texas A&M (158th NET ranking). The loss gives the Rebels (9-5, 0-1) their first “bad” loss of the year as the other defeats came against teams ranked in the top-30 of the NET.
In order to salvage the season, the Rebels have to win a bunch of games in the SEC, something it doesn’t appear poised to do. It’s chance begins now though, as the Rebs welcome the Arkansas Razorbacks (30th in the NET) to Oxford. A win in this game could help make up for such a baffling loss Monday night.
Breein Tyree, Devontae Shuler, and friends currently sit at 89th in the NET, which puts them way off the bubble at the moment. A team that spent the offseason with lofty expectations is on the verge of entering February with little to play for. While the team mostly just looks bad, both offensively and defensively, it’s obvious that a couple of things going right could change all that.
Namely if Blake Hinson gets back into a groove as an offensive threat, Breein Tyree continues on his tear, and the bench contributes a little, this team can beat a lot of the teams on its schedule. Unfortunately, the aforementioned bench just isn’t doing anything at all at the moment, which is crushing the potential many anticipated.
Any hope to beating Arkansas rests in containing junior guard Mason Jones who leads the team in points (19.8), rebounds (6.8), assists (2.8), and steals (1.9). If the Rebels could manage to keep his impact minimized, things wouldn’t be easy, but the game could be close late, allowing the Rebs to walk away with a victory.
Unfortunately, I don’t expect that to happen.
