The summer solstice was last week which we all know is the point when the sun is at its very hottest and also very close to the earth more so than any planet.
OK, maybe not. But ya boi, OMTB, did notice the sizzle of the grill, plumes of smoke rising in the suburbs, and shrieks of fun coming from pools as families fully dove into summer last weekend.
While the cool waves lapped over my dad bod, I did notice a harrowing trend — music was not really slapping like it used to back in my Ole Miss days. It’s most likely the aging process to blame or being less concerned with the latest music trends, but where was my classic summertime pool jams when I needed them?
So I went to the only reliable source of music information I could possibly think of - the writing staff at Red Cup to compile a mix tape of our summer jams. Yeah, a mix tape, not a Spotify channel or a Twitter tune-in radio signal or whatever these kids are doing nowadays.
The one good thing about this list - and it may be the only good thing - is it spans several types of music, so if you hate one song, just wait a few minutes and a banger will come on that will have you nodding your head in a fizzy Busch Light induced groove.
There’s a lot of songs about the summer, and some of them are even referenced here. The criteria for the list wasn’t that the song had to be about the summer, but just what you’ll be listening to this summer when you’re cracking open a cold one or hitting the open road to head on vacation.
