That’s right, boys and girls. Tonight you can cheer for a team that set an Ole Miss single-season SEC wins record in the diamond. You can see a team that’s disciplined and has a knack for coming through in the clutch while playing a loose and fun style of ball.
Yes. The Ole Miss softball team is hosting a regional in Oxford this weekend. I previewed it here. I suggest you read that as it hits on a few helpful snippets of information.
Ole Miss faces the UT-Chattanooga Mocs tonight at 6 PM. The Mocs had a pretty good season this year, but last season a lesser Ole Miss team run-ruled them in their only matchup. It was ugly. Here’s hoping the same thing happens tonight.
A bigger storyline than this one game is that it could be one of the last opportunities we have to see Kylan Becker and Brittany Finney play softball at Ole Miss. Those two have had a prolific impact on the program and should be celebrated.
Becker, of course, has started in every game since she arrived on campus, leading the team in batting average for the past two seasons. She’s a member of the US National Team and has never committed an error in her career. She’s phenomenal in the field and at the plate, and this team is going to miss her a lot next year.
Brittany Finney has always been a contributor, hitting when she isn’t pitching. For a decent portion of her career she seemed like she just wasn’t quite good enough at either of those things to make a huge impact outside of hitting the occasional home run and serving as a second pitcher on the weekends.
Recently though, Molly Jacobsen has struggled a bit on the mound, and Finney has had to step into some tough situations in relief. Since she has done well, Mike Smith has begun to give her more starts over Jacobsen, and Finney has done quite well. She’ll probably get the start tonight, and if not she’ll swing for the fences when she’s up to bat.
