On Aug. 1, 2018, betting on sports became legal in Mississippi. Federal and state law now protects your God-given right to drive to Tunica and blow hard-earned money on the over/under of some Tuesday night MAC game. To help guide you through the first season of legal college football gambling (because you certainly weren’t taking advantage of gray-area internet gambling sites before!), we’ve set up this weekly betting guide.
It’s only Week 2 and I’ve already pressed the reset button on this season.
So far this season, I’ve given you two emotional picks—against Wyoming in Week 0 and Texas-San Antonio in Week 1—which led to losses and kept us at .500 for the season. In both cases, I said take the risk and roll the dice. So no more emotional grudge picks or trying to out think the room.
Ole Miss is not on the books this week with an outmatched Southern Illinois coming to Oxford. Let’s go get some money, shall we?
No. 3 Georgia vs No. 24 South Carolina
Take South Carolina to beat the 10-point spread
This line is fat for a few reasons. Georgia vs. South Carolina is usually an incredibly close game despite the Bulldogs dominating the all-time win-loss record. But more recently, South Carolina has won five out of the last 11, including three out of the last four in Columbia. The Gamecocks are a more complete team than last season’s group (24-10 L to UGA). CRANK UP THE SANDSTORM AND PUT SOME DOLLARS ON USC TO BEAT THE 10 POINTS.
Southern Mississippi vs Louisiana-Monroe
Take Southern Miss at -220
Southern Miss just gave coach Jay Hopson an extension, and they looked absolutely dominant against Jackson St. this past week (55-7). Louisiana-Monroe beat Southeastern Louisiana, 34-31, in the Bourbon Bowl when a water boy made a game saving tackle for the Warhawks. Bet on the Mustard Buzzards and Oxford native Jack Abraham to take this win as the home team.
Hawaii vs Rice
Take the over on 71 points
Don’t sleep on the Warriors (and that’s not a clever way of saying their games are late). Hawaii averaged more than 50 points in its first two games against Navy and Colorado State. Don’t expect Rice keep that average from climbing even further. The other important factor in any over pick is the more dominant team’s defense. Hawaii gave up 41 to Navy and 34 to CSU, so you’d have to assume Rice will at least get in the end zone a time or two. Take the over and, with a 11 p.m. kick time, take something to keep you awake.
Ball St. vs No. 8 Notre Dame
Take the under on 62 points
Notre Dame is coming off an emotional win versus Michigan, and Ball St. may catch the Irish off guard at first. Talent is going to win out, but I could see things not clicking on all cylinders this week offensively for either team. A 42-14 win would keep all the fans at rest, and it means you’re walking happily to the bank because YOU TOOK THE UNDER.
