Ole Miss baseball heads to Memphis for midweek action

It’s going to be a cold one at AutoZone Park.

AutoZone Park will host its most boisterous and crowded event of the year tonight - the annual Ole Miss-Memphis midweek baseball game.

It’s really honestly a damn shame AZP isn’t used more often for Ole Miss baseball. That’s strictly coming from someone living in the 901, however. The park is in really great shape, the staff there is solid, there’s BBQ nachos and also you get the chance to sit in phenomenal seats for $10 or less. There is the whole “oh, it’s in a terrible part of town” aspect, but c’mon you only live once.

ON TO THE GAME...

The Rebels faced Denz in Oxford in the first midweek tilt against the Tigers. They chased his ass early and he gave up five runs on the way to a 8-6 Rebel win.

Houston Roth will face Memphis for the second time this season. In his first appearance, his pitch count escalated over four innings of work, he gave up two runs while striking out six and was credited with his first win of the year.

Roth has had some mediocre starts, but last week went five innings against a very solid Southern Miss squad and only gave up one run. He showed his best stuff then, and we’ll look to see if he gained some confidence from that outing.

Denz’s only loss of the year came at the hands of the Rebels, and he has since compiled a respectable earned run average, keeping opponents to a .212 batting average and striking out 30 over 28.2 innings.

The Rebels have continued to maintain an offensive minded approach this season with now seven regular players batting over .300 for the year and a team average at a startlingly phenomenal .299 average.

Tonight’s game has a first pitch time of 6:30 p.m. at Autozone Park. There will be some low temperatures in store tonight, so make sure to drink as many beers as possible to stay warm.

This game kicks off what will be a five game “rivalry week” against Memphis, Mississippi State this weekend and Southern Miss next midweek. These five games will either cause you shame or pride and may even make you miss Sunday school if the Rebels don’t fare well.

Sitting at 25-4, the Rebels hold the lead in the SEC for winning percentage with the Florida Gators nipping at their heels at 25-5. Ole Miss is also first in the SEC West through the first three conference weekend series.
