HOME SWEET HOME.
Finally the Rebs have come BACK to Oxford.
After back to back road SEC series and a midweek game in Pearl, Miss., our boys are back in town (cue the music). The No. 11 Rebels (29-8, 8-7) will play eight of its next nine games at Swayze Field, the number one all-time baseball stadium and atmosphere ever. And boy howdy do they need a homestretch to get back to their dominating ways.
Ole Miss posted 1-2 weekends against Mississippi State and Vanderbilt the last two series on the road after not losing a single series on the year. Hopefully, the familiarity of Swayze Field, the normality of sleeping in one’s own bed and of course being able to hit The ‘Brary after games to enjoy a Coca-Cola Classic and a healthy snack will be a difference maker.
Arkansas State will enter Wednesday as potential lambs to the slaughter. The Red Wolves are 12-20 on the season and just 4-11 in the Sun Belt, so I think we can all see this should be a slump buster kind of game for Ole Miss.
ASU has been able to notch a few good wins including a 31-7 win (again, this is a baseball score) against Louisiana-Monroe on the road and a 14-2 win over Louisiana-Lafayette in Jonesboro.
But this is also a ASU team who was swept by Georgia State and Memphis - which were both teams swept by Ole Miss. If the Rebels come out primed and ready to bounce back, this should be a game you’ll be able to leave early very happy.
Speaking of relative happiness,. today is another “kids get in free”, dollar hot dog night. Dads who attend and get a health screening get a free “dad cap” that is khaki with a massive red “M” on it. So, get yourself a good report from maybe a nurse or something, get a hat, buy a shitload of $1 hot dogs and maybe bring your kids or tell your wife you’re working late. Ball is in your court there.
Jordan Fowler will be back on the bump for the Rebels on Wednesday looking for his fourth win on the season. This will leave Houston Roth potentially available for the weekend series vs Georgia in a relief appearance, which is a great added asset.
Fowler was touched up in a couple appearances this year and has compiled a 3.94 earned run average. He had a very steady hand early on in midweek play, however, and should be able to dispatch of ASU for a solid start.
The Red Wolves are batting .248 for the season with 21 home runs as a team. Opponents are slapping the ball around pretty well against them with a .265 batting average with 23 home runs against.
Zachary Patterson will start for ASU with a 6.75 ERA in 14.2 innings pitched this year. He has yet to notch a victory for the season, but he has logged 12 strikeouts compared to 13 walks on the year. Methinks this is a potential junkball pitching nightmare for Ole Miss if they aren’t patient at the dish.
The Rebels will be looking for its 30th win for the year with now less than 20 games left to play. Ole Miss will then face No. 23 Georgia (26-11, 9-6) this weekend in Oxford.
