On Aug. 1, 2018, betting on sports became legal in Mississippi. Federal and state law now protect your God-given right to drive to Biloxi and blow hard-earned money on the over/under of some Tuesday night MAC game. To help guide you through the first season of legal college football gambling (because you certainly weren’t taking advantage of gray-area internet gambling sites before!), we’ve set up this weekly betting guide.
It’s time to face facts. The betting guide at RCR is the UConn of handicapping this season. Honestly, maybe just reverse all my picks and win some money.
Another 1-3 week last week put our season record at 16-22, which is the worst in the two seasons since we started this little advice column up.
Throw your shame, hate and internet garbage at me. This is truly time for a turnaround.
Like Coach Matt Luke says, “They remember November.”
LET’S GO 4-0 ...
Louisiana Tech at No. 21 Mississippi State
Bet the UNDER in the Bulldog Bowl (48 points)
MSU is fresh off its biggest win of the year over a top 25 Texas A&M and is undoubtedly feeling unbeatable again. La Tech hung with LSU in Baton Rouge earlier in the season due to some miscues by the Tigers, but they haven’t scored more than 31 against anyone in FBS this season. MSU has more talent on defense than La Tech can handle, but it will be an ugly game most likely as State fans have become used to this year. 31-13 sounds about right to me in somehow the primetime SEC Network game on Saturday.
Northwestern vs No. 3 Notre Dame
Bet Northwestern to COVER (+9.5)
It’s hard to tell what you’ll get out of Northwestern — three-point wins over Rutgers and Nebraska aren’t impressive but a two-touchdown win at Wisconsin last week turned some heads. The same could be said for Notre Dame, who is 4-4 against the spread this year. Underwhelming performances against Pitt, Ball State, and Vandy tell me the Irish may be susceptible to a closer than expected game again this week — NIGHT kickoff at Northwestern, let’s get weird.
South Carolina at Ole Miss
Bet the OVER (68 points)
This game is going to be a shootout. The Rebel defense can’t seem to keep anyone out of the end zone, and South Carolina has shown some semblance of an offense at least 50 percent of the time. It’s also an early game in Oxford, so I think Ole Miss may get out to a quick start and lead. Ole Miss will find a way to score 30+ against the Gamecocks, and I can’t imagine Cocky not finding the end zone four to five times, as well as tacking on some field goals in the process.
Michigan State at Maryland
Bet Michigan State to WIN (+145)
The reason is really obvious — head coach D.J. Durkin was reinstated then let go all in the course of 36 hours. The Terps have to be in a state of flux from these pieces of news. The Spartans haven’t been the most reliable team on the field, but at -145, they are a good value pick in my opinion as a winner.
So what did we do right? What did we miss this week? Are you planning on following the advice of a 16-22 gambler? Comment or tweet @RedCupRebellion and let us know what your slip says this week.
