Well, will you look at that: Ole Miss beat State in something! The Rebels took down their in-state rivals in the SEC Softball Tournament on Wednesday, scratching out a 2-1 win to advance to a second-round showdown with top-seeded Florida. The Gators aren’t just the best team in the conference, though—they’re currently the No. 1 team in the country.
In fact, Florida is one of nine SEC teams playing in Knoxville this week that rank nationally. The other four teams in the conference (Vandy doesn’t have a softball program) received votes this week, meaning the entire league fits within the top 32.
The opening round went chalk, with Ole Miss, Bama, Kentucky and LSU each advancing past lower seeds. The highlight of the day was the redemption of Bailey Hemphill, the Alabama slugger who cost her team a game against Ole Miss last week when she forgot to step on the plate after a home run. When Bailey left the yard against Arkansas on Wednesday, her teammates gave her a little help finding her way home.
