After three days, 253 total selections and one too many gas mask bong videos, the 2016 NFL Draft is in the books. As expected, it was a historic weekend for Ole Miss, which had five players selected... the most since six Rebs were drafted in 1971.
Hampered by the malicious efforts of a yet-to-be-identified hacker (though it looks like we have a primary suspect), Laremy Tunsil saw his slide ended by the Dolphins with the 13th overall pick. Laquon Treadwell (23rd overall to the Vikings) and Robert Nkemdiche (29th overall to the Cardinals) followed him off the board in the first round. After a quiet Day 2, two more Rebs were picked up on Saturday: Fahn Cooper to the 49ers in the fifth round and Cody Core to the Bengals in the sixth.
But there are still Rebels looking for a home in the NFL. The most notable snub was Trae Elston, a four-year starter at safety who was named to the AP All-American second team last season. Elston, who visited Pittsburgh, Minnesota and San Diego in the weeks before the draft, was thought by some to be a potential mid-rounder after an impressive pro day in Oxford.
"I'm just ready to make a statement. I really don't know what to expect," Elston told the Cup a couple weeks before the Draft. "If I don't get drafted, I'll go through free agency. I'll find a way in. A lot of people don't get this chance, so I'm trying to take advantage of it."
Jaylen Walton, Aaron Morris, Justin Bell and others are also still looking for their shot to crack an NFL roster. With the draft over, we'll see several of these guys sign on as rookie free agents. We'll be tracking those signings here as they become official.
Trae Elston has signed with the New Orleans Saints.
