Phil Longo and Wesley McGriff are risky hires for opposite reasons

Let’s talk about the staff changes that went down on Thursday.

In case you missed it, Hugh Freeze’s coaching staff saw a lot of turnover on Thursday. D-line coach Chris Kiffin is joining his bro at Florida Atlantic and wide receivers coach Grant Heard is expected to depart for a passing game coordinator job at Indiana. Losing Kiffin is palatable given the defense’s struggles this season and his ties to the NCAA investigation. Losing Hears, well, just plain sucks.

Freeze also bagged himself a couple of new coordinators: Phil Longo is bumping up from the FCS level to head the offense and former Rebel assistant Wesley McGriff is leaving his defensive backs gig at Auburn to run the defense. Both of those are under-the-radar hires forced by some mixture of the NCAA investigation and the fact that Ole Miss as a program isn’t as an appealing destination as fans might hope. Both hires are also risky, but for completely different reasons. I explain why in the video above.
