Given a first taste of Ole Miss football under Shea Patterson’s command, Rebel fans are rightly curious about whether last Saturday’s triumph over Texas A&M represents the sort of sustainable success to be expected with him behind center.
So, after the trial by fire in College Station, Shea gets another road test — albeit not nearly as daunting as Kyle Field — in the form of Vanderbilt in Nashville. The Commodores rank 95th in S&P+ currently. At 4-6 on the season, Vanderbilt has losses to South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Missouri on the schedule, and Bill C. is giving them a 17 percent chance to win.
It’ll also be interesting to see how variegated of an offensive game plan Hugh Freeze brings to Nashville, since he admitted earlier this week to running just four base sets all night against A&M. Understandable with a true frosh running the show under the maelstrom of 100,000 very angry Aggie fans.
Perhaps more importantly: can the Rebels’ running game remain on its upward trajectory? There’s no better comfort for a young quarterback making his way in the world than strong run support to help carry the load.
