College Football Playoff rankings: Ole Miss jumps Florida, in position for Sugar Bowl

The committee moved the Rebs up to No. 13 and dropped the Gators to No. 18. As long as Bama wins the SEC Championship game, Ole Miss is bound for New Orleans.

Wow.

We all figured that Ole Miss had a very good shot at passing up Florida in the Playoff rankings — and by extension the Sugar Bowl pecking order — but we thought it would take at least one more Gators loss in the SEC Championship for that to happen. But in the latest reveal, the Rebels already find themselves a whopping five spots ahead.

Ole Miss shot up five spots to No. 13 and Florida plunged six spots to No. 18.

As long as Bama beats the Gators this Saturday in Atlanta, the Rebs are going to New Orleans for the prestigious New Year's Day bowl. You see, if the SEC Champion gets an invite to the four-team Playoff — which No. 2 Bama will get if they win the conference — their spot in the Sugar Bowl is filled by the next highest team in the CFP rankings.

That 10-2 Florida is behind 9-3 Ole Miss is a bit perplexing considering the 28-point ass whipping the Gators handed the Rebs early in the season. But the committee clearly understands that this Florida team and its anemic offense is a far different group without quarterback Will Grier, who was suspended for a positive PED test shortly after the Ole Miss game. While the Rebs were busy crushing then-No. 21 Mississippi State on the road in Starkville last Saturday, Florida was getting embarrassed, 27-2, by Florida State.
