The Ole Miss roundballers traveled to the coast of South Carolina last week with the hopes of playing in some RPI-boosting games against Oklahoma State and Virginia. Unfortunately, those opportunities were squandered when the Rebels lost a tough opening game to George Mason, sending them to the losers bracket to to close the tournament with a 1-2 record.
As a result of their poor showing in Charleston, this team desperately needs to regain confidence and pile up some wins, starting on Wednesday with their match-up with Georgia State.
You may remember the Panthers for last year's NCAA tournament upset win over Baylor, or more importantly, for this:
Yes, coach Ron Hunter is still there, but the stool is gone (he was recovering from surgery). His Panthers have only played two games so far this season and won them both in convincing fashion. But Ole Miss is the first true test for the 140th ranked Panthers, as their first two victories came by way of Middle Georgia State and Emmanuel College.
Another name that might sound familiar is Kevin Ware, who suffered that gruesome injury while playing for Louisville in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. He has more than doubled his point production from a year ago (16.5 points per game so far in 2015) and is shooting over 50 percent from the field.
The Rebels, who have struggled against good post-play so far this season, may have their hands full with Georgia State forward Jeremy Hollowed. The redshirt junior averages a team-high 18.5 points per game so far this season. Despite Hollowell's early success, the Panthers are a bit undersized in the frontcourt and rely on the guards for a lot of their scoring. Does that sound familiar?
