SEC Baseball Tournament 2014: Ole Miss Rebels vs. Vanderbilt Commodores Preview

Two teams in the hunt for a national seed face off in Hoover.

USA TODAY Sports

Well, that sucked.

The Rebels fell in an excruciating 2-1 game to the Arkansas Razorbacks yesterday, leaving far too many scoring opportunities on the field and not giving the Rebel pitching staff the run support needed to win. Chris Ellis, despite playing well after the first inning, lost his first game of the 2014 season, falling to 9-1. He allowed just two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out two in just over 6 innings. The reliable Scott Weathersby worked the rest of the game, allowing no runs, but the Rebel bats simply couldn't get anything going (or, rather, they couldn't finish what they started).

So now, the Rebels find themselves in a lose and go home scenario after dropping their first game in Hoover. Thankfully, this matchup is the matchup we were hoping for in the second round, as Vanderbilt and their top-10 RPI give the Rebels the best chance at an RPI boost in Hoover outside of Florida or Carolina. So, yes, yesterday sucked, but today's another opportunity to help this team's postseason chances, so get excited or something.

Yesterday, Vandy was mercy ruled by LSU, 11-1. So both teams suffered embarrassing setbacks and find themselves clinging to long shot hopes of a National Seed opportunity at this point. The Rebels will face a tough lefty in Tyler Beede, who will countering with a tough lefty of our own in Christian Trent.

Here is a look at the Vanderbilt squad:

Both teams like to be aggressive while on the bases and they both are in a tie for the most SB attempts.  As of this writing the Rebels offensive numbers have not been updated to reflect yesterday's loss to Arkansas, but by now, all of you know who our leaders are at the plate.
