If you've been following Ole Miss baseball over the last few years, you know this team has an inexplicable tendency to lose midweek rivalry games. The Rebs are 1-3 in said games in 2014, having split two contests with Memphis and lost in Pearl to Mississippi State and Southern Miss, the latter of whom makes the trip to Oxford on Wednesday night.
Here's your not-so-fun fact of the day: Mike Bianco has a losing record against USM (14-16). When the Rebs last met them in late March, the Golden Eagles walked away with their third consecutive win in the series and their sixth in the last seven meetings. Ole Miss entered the ninth inning of that game with a 3-1 lead before coughing up four runs to lose, 5-3.
On paper, this shouldn't be much of a challenge for Ole Miss, who is up to No. 10 in the polls after a road sweep of Kentucky. USM is 26-19 (though they are a solid 14-7 in Conference USA). Their team batting average is .243 and they don't have a single guy over .300. Their team ERA is 3.60 and the man getting the nod on Wednesday, senior righty Cameron Giannini, carries a 4.13. Of course, the Rebs had the advantage on paper last time, and we know how that turned out.
Freshman Evan Anderson will make his third start of the year for Ole Miss, the other two coming against Southeastern Louisiana and UAPB. The lefty is 1-0 on the season with a 0.79 ERA in 11.1 innings.
