As we had hoped, Ole Miss will throw Mike Mayers today against the William and Mary Tribe to open the Raleigh, NC regional. Dubya and Emm will counter with lefty Jason Inghram, who has a 3.46 ERA along with an 8-6 record over 15 starts. Opponents are hitting just .242 against him, and the Rebs have struggled somewhat against lefties this season, so this will certainly be a challenging matchup for Bianco's team. If the Rebels can get past Inghram and into the Tribe bullpen earlier, I like their chances. Their team ERA is 4.16 and opposing batting average is .279, stats which should, in an ideal world, benefit an SEC team.
The strategy of throwing Mayers here means that, if the Rebs are to win and advance to face, presumably, the host NC State Wolfpack, they will have ace Bobby Wahl available and fresh. It is a gamble, but it is a gamble that could pay off well.
