Sources we trust - and, yes, in many cases the very same sources who assured us that Kriby Smart or Larry Fedora would be the guy - have confirmed to us that Hugh Freeze will be offered the Ole Miss Rebel coaching job today. I don't envision any circumstance under which the guy doesn't take the job so, ipso facto, he's our program's next head football coach.
Freeze is currently the head coach of the 10-2, Sun Belt Conference Champion Red Wolves of Arkansas State. He was an Ole Miss assistant under Ed Orgeron in 2006-07 known for his offensive playcalling (which, per many, was rarely utilized in the Orgeron regime), motivation, and recruiting. Most importantly to the people making the hire, though, are Freeze's ties and loyalties to the Ole Miss program. One of the chief goals of this coaching search as stated by Archie Manning was the desire to establish a sense of program stability not felt in Oxford since the David Cutcliffe fire. Hugh Freeze can deliver that, if we'll let him.
We expect an official announcement to this effect either later today or sometime tomorrow. We will inform and opine as more information and opinions develop. Stay tuned.
