Rebel Roundup - 6/3/10

SBNation has Lacrosse photos, but not college baseball? In fairness, this photo is from a Final Four-type matchup.

Pomeranz Named Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist | OleMissSports.com
I mean, there are 30 semifinalists, so it's not as cool as it could be, but congratulations are still in order for Pom. So, congrats, Pom.

Starting Pitchers the talk of Charlottesville Regional | RebelGrove.com
Coach Bianco has announced that he will start Pom for the Rebels' first game of the Charlottesville Regional against St. Johns and Aaron Barrett for the second game against TBD. UVA, on the other hand, named their third starter, Cody Winiarksi (5-0 with a 4.39), their starting pitcher against VCU. This would then mean that Cavalier ace Danny Hultzen (scroll down for some "Who is this guy?" action) could start later in the winner's bracket on Saturday assuming a UVA victory. This is an interesting strategy. Remember, during last year's Oxford Regional, the Mizzou Tigers implemented a very similar strategy and it blew up in their faces. For the sake of our Rebels, let's hope the same happens to UVA.

The Last Time Each SEC Team Lost to a Non-BCS Team | Team Speed Kills
The last SEC team to lose to a non-BCS team was Vanderbilt's loss to Army this past season. Our Rebels are sortof in the middle-of-the-pack with our home loss to Wyoming (oh God painful, painful memories are coming back) in 2005 being the 5th most recent and the least recent (the latest?) is Florida's 1988 loss to Memphis. TSK has also taken the time to look at every BCS program and the last time they lost to a non-BCS school. Once again, Florida's loss to Memphis in 1988 is the earliest such on the list.
