Basham named to Johnny Bench Watch List; other baseball news

For two years, I have claimed that Brett Basham is one of the top defensive catchers in the country, and I am glad to see that those who aren't wearing red and blue glasses agree with me.

Basham is one of 44 catchers named to the watch list that will be narrowed down throughout the season.  By May 14th, it will be narrowed down to the final ten, and the winner will be announced June 26th.  You can read the Ole Miss release here.

In other news...

The Rebels improved their record to 12-4 last night with a dominating 7-1 win over Arkansas State.  Brett Bukvich (3-0) was stellar with 5 IP, 0 ER, 2H, 3BB and 7SO.  Also of note is TIm Ferguson who had 4 steals on the evening.

Bukvich's performance will move him into the Sunday starting role which makes a potent weekend rotation with Pomeranz (3.27 ERA) on Friday, Irwin (1.59 ERA) on Saturday and Buk (0.90 ERA) on Sunday.  I hope Buk pitches as well on Sunday as he has during midweek games.

The Rebels return to Oxford tonight to face the Memphis Tigers at 6:30 p.m.  Nathan Baker (3.48 ERA) will start the game for the Rebels.
