2014 College World Series: Ole Miss vs. Texas Tech Preview

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Relegated to the loser's bracket, the Rebs and Red Raiders are fighting to stay alive in Omaha.

After falling 2-1 to the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers in their College World Series opening game, the Ole Miss Rebels find themselves in the loser's bracket where they will take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Texas Tech, who are making their first College World Series appearance in program history, had their Omaha debut spoiled by fellow Big XII program TCU, who defeated them 3-2 on Sunday. The Red Raiders kept it close in that contest until the eighth, when national seed TCU scored a pair of runs to all but seal the victory.

As evidenced by their 45-20 (14-10, Big XII) record, Texas Tech's a solid baseball club this year. Here's how their numbers shake out on offense:

On the bump for Texas Tech this afternoon will be freshman righty Ryan Mosely. This is a bit of an interesting choice, given Mosely's primary role out of the bullpen for the Red Raiders. He's made 21 appearances on the year, but just four starts. The Lubbock native has earned an ERA 3.32 over 43.1 innings, with opponents batting .209 against him.

He will be facing lefty Christian Trent, who is fresh off of a dominating performance against Louisiana-Lafayette in the Super Regionals. Trent leads the Rebel starters with a 2.21 ERA and a .235 opposing batting average, striking out 80 and walking just 19 over 102.0 innings.

So, by all accounts, the Rebels should be favorites to win this thing. That said, this is the College World Series, and every team in Omaha is there for a good reason. Texas Tech will be a tough out for the Rebs, but if there's one thing that this team has shown this season is the ability to endure through tough times.

Hotty Toddy!
