Drew Pomeranz has made his return to the rotation with the Oakland Athletics over the past week. He pitched five innings Tuesday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight. He picked up his third win on the year to put his record at 3-1. He also started on May 7, only allowing two hits over five innings while striking out five. Oakland appears to be easing him into the rotation after starting the season in the bullpen as he ended up with 68 pitches on the seventh of May and 82 on Tuesday.
Aaron Barrett had been sent down to the minors but has returned to the big club. For the Nationals, he has picked up a pair of wins with one hold and no losses. He has tossed 14 innings with 16 K and seven walks with a 0.64 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.
While Zack Cozart has struggled with the bat this year (.190/.228/.273) his above average/elite defense have kept him valuable to the Cincinnati Reds.
Seth Smith has been one of the hottest hitters in the NL and he was named the NL player of the week for the week ending May 11, 2014 (14 for 28, 1.000 slugging percentage, 28 total bases). For the season he is at .336/.422/.582 and a 186 OPS+.
Down on the Farm:
David GoForth leads the Southern League with nine saves. He is 1-1 with a 2.29 ERA and 1.07 WHIP while striking out nine in 19.2 IP. (Kind of surprising, but he has not had a very good K/9 ratio throughout his minor league career.)
