Quick preview since we're less than an hour to tip. This is one of those games that if you're serious about making a run in conference, you can't drop this one. We lost a bad one last weekend to State and can't afford another RPI crushing loss to an inferior opponent. The Rebs dropped on in Columbia last year that could've wrecked the season if not for an SEC Tourney run.
Looking at the factors, the Gamecocks struggle with their initial offense as they shoot the ball poorly and turn the ball over quite a bit. Those are two aspects the Rebels have excelled in. Where USC has done well is crashing the offensive glass, which - before conference play - was a major weakness for the Rebels. The Rebs have done well the last two games and will have to continue that today.
On offense, the Rebels need to look to get to the FT Line as the Gamecocks have put opponents on the line at an alarmingly high rate. They force a lot of TOs, so the Rebs will have to take care of the ball.
I think the Rebs pull this one out. Something appeared to click against LSU and the Rebs actually caught a fortunate break or two in that one for the first time this season. That momentum will carry over to today and the Rebs come out of this one with a solid win.
(Sure to be terribly, terribly wrong) Predictions:
Ole Miss 81, South Carolina 71
(As always, the national rankings pulled from kenpom.com, quite possibly the coolest site on the whole wide intertubes... Red Cup Rebellion excluded of course)
