Lets get somethings out of the way. Yes, I am a Cornhusker fan and after you read what I am about to write, I swear to you I am not trying to troll the fine folks that compose the Ole' Miss fan base. Now first and foremost I am a fan of college football, and that is why I want to discuss the Ole Miss and Texas AM game.
I just finished watching the Saints play the Patriots and at a critical moment in the game, Belichick did something he has done before, he gamble. With less than three minutes left, Belichick went for it on a fourth down deep in their own territory. Pats didn't convert, and Saints got the ball back. They scored a FG, and then Pats came back and scored a TD to win the game. So, what does this has to do with the Rebels? I am sure many of you know. With 3 minutes and 7 seconds left the Rebels took possession of the ball deep in their own territory.
Hugh Freeze took the Les Miles playbook and threw the ball three times. With 3 minutes left, you have enough time to run it. Why not run it a couple of times? Why be in a hurry to go downfield when you have Manziel waiting in the sideline. Don't give him anytime to play. Then Freeze did something that I think was his biggest mistake. He didn't coached to win, but to not lose. So on fourth down, deep in his own territory, he opted to have his team punt. And I said, "what?! ". Why would you do that? You have Johnny Football waiting to get his hands on the ball. Say what you want about the guy, but point blank, the guy is one of the greatest weapon in the history of college football, EVER. You are giving him the ball back with more than 2 minutes? What do you think is going to happen? Well we all know what happened.
So Freeze vs Belichick. Belichick on one hand will play to win. He is not scared of having to answer the tough questions that come with gambles. He will lay out on the line, and sometimes you have to. If you are playing Florida, I get it. But the Aggies? no, go for it on fourth. And to top it off, your defense was thin. So you give the ball back to Johnny Football to face an injured defense?
Just my thoughts, I have seen several Ole Miss game and I feel Freeze plays not to lose and that will cost you in the long run. Sometimes a coach must go against conventional thinking and lay it out. There is talent in the team, but right now the parts are greater than the sum.
