Aberdeen High School defensive end Channing Ward, a four/five star prospect and arguably one of the top players in MIssissippi high shcool football last season, was cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse earlier today per the official Ole Miss football Twitter feed.
Ward's biggest concerns were regarding his ACT score and high school transcripts. Aberdeen High School recently lost accreditation and was taken under control by the State of Mississippi, something which is hard to imagine not having been a concern with the NCAA with regards to his high school GPA. Regardless of the details, however, Ward is eligible to play football at Ole Miss, and is likely to begin officially practicing with the team today.
Ward is listed by the Ole Miss official site as being 6'4" and 250 pounds, meaning he has the size to see action nearly immediately at defensive end. His being cleared is great news not only for the Rebel fan base, but also for head coach Hugh Freeze. Ward is easily one of the most highly regarded players in Hugh Freeze's first recruiting class, and will likely be asked to contribute right away on a defensive line which is both thin and inexperienced.
