Tonight at 6:30, Jackson area Rebels (20-8, 5-4 SEC) get a chance to see what this team is made of at Trustmark Park in Pearl as the Rebels take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (16-12) for the second time this season.
We would all like to forget what happened on March 20th. The Rebels had just lost a weekend series to Auburn. Then they lost a 10-0 laugher to Southern Miss. Sam Smith suffered the loss, allowing just one earned run.... but four total. The Rebels were full of errors, and the game was never in question.
Since then, we appear to have gotten back on track. The question, of course, is whether our promising young midweek pitchers will be able to hold up in this game. If they pitch the way they're capable of pitching, we could really do well on the mound. Alternatively, if they pitch the way they're.... capable of pitching... we'll give up ten runs again.
However, I think that's unlikely. Sam Smith (1-2, 4.6 ERA, 21 Ks, 4 BBs) is a capable starter, and if he struggles, we can go to Josh Laxer (2-0, 7.15 ERA, 5 Ks, 3 BBs) or Hawtin Buchanan (0.0 ERA, 10 Ks, 1 BB). Hopefully the Rebels bats will be alive a little more in this outing. We're hitting .311 as a team, and it makes no sense that Southern Miss was able to blank us in March. I fully expect Alex Yarbrough, Matt Snyder, and Preston Overbey to step up and get us some significant run production.
Boomer Scarbrough (I know, right?) will take the mound for the Golden Eagles. We struggled against him a lot in his last outing, but I'm not sure that will be the case tonight. After all, he's a righty. Of course, they'll probably go to a lefty in relief first, which should silence our bats. Have to hope we've scored enough by then.
