Wednesday Question: One of Modus
Generally, we are the "authors" of "content" around here - "here" being a blog and not a message board. Recognize, we do, that you've come here not to contribute, but to consume. Nevertheless, there is the sporadic occasion where, either for our benefit or for to exercise the thinkifiers of the masses, we ask you a question. Today's question is . . .
What do you expect to see from this baseball team, not from a record standpoint, but in style of play, etc?

well if reports from camp are to be believed....
I am expecting a lineup more patient at the plate, attempting to work the pitcher into longer at-bats. I also expect us to use more of the field; we have been far to easy to scout the last few seasons in that regard. Also, with the apparent speed we possess outside of Synder, Allen, and Overby, with a speed guy also likely to man the DH spot, I think we will see a “running game” which puts a bit more pressure on the opposing defense.
Of course, we have heard this stuff before (better hitting, better running, etc.) As much as I support Bianco, unless he has “let go of the rope” a bit where it comes to his philosophy, I am in believe it when I see it mode.
Just another "good for nothing law school grad".
My comment regarding a speed guy at DH assumes Synder plays 1B
though I have seen projected lineups with Mistone at 1B with Snyder DH.
Just another "good for nothing law school grad".
From the sounds of it...
I expect this to be an overall down year, where our pitching is merely ok but our offense is more patient and dynamic. Our pitching will fail us and our offense will not find the consistency necessary to overcome that, but we will be more fun to watch…and we’ll still be a “good” baseball team.
I'm a Rebel, but I bleed the cherry and silver of the Lobos.
I hope to see a different philosophy
at the plate. Our gameplan has been pretty odd the past few seasons. We have had lineups full of guys who were single/double hitters, yet MB seemed to insist that they swing at the first pitch and play power ball. I won’t believe the reports out of spring training until I see it OB the field either. I hope we truly will try to work counts, advance runners, abd be a little more selective at the plate. We had far too many innings last season where opposing pitchers only had to throw three or four pitches and then the inning was over.

well if the history of ole miss athletics holds true (see ole miss football defense 2010)..
we should expect our strengths to be the opposite of what is expected. meaning, dominant pitching and awful offensive numbers. however, it appears the players are feelings great at the plate so hopefully we will be able to produce.
Bianco is still the coach,
So I expect us to continue to not have a clue what our style is and for it to change inning to inning. I fully expect to see us bunting after 2 walks to lead off a game and then to have Matt Snyder trying to straight steal second in the 9 th when we are down 2 runs. I expect to see us make pitchers throw 22 pitches to get a 1-2-3 inning and the next throw 6 to do the same. I expect to see pitchers get up and sit down in the bullpen no fewer than 4 times in a game. I expect us to shift our defence to play a hitter to pull and then have the catcher call a fastball on the outer half. Why do I expect these things? Because I have watched MB do them all for the last 8 years. Because, while amazing at many things, Bianca is a below average on field game day coach. I hope I am wrong and we win despite these things. Here’s to hope, and it continuing to spring eternal.

That covered it better than I planned to.
I expect small ball when we shouldn’t be playing small ball. That’s what I hope that I don’t see.
What I expect
I excpect them to hit the ball as hard and as far as possible when they’re on offense while positioning it strategically away from any of the other team’s players. When on defense, I expect them to obtain 3 outs as efficiently and effectively as possible.
That is all.

Expectation and anticipation aren't necessarily the same things.
I expect to see a fundamentally sound team offensively and defensively. There is no excuse for fielding a routine ground ball anywhere but in front of your body as opposed to the Roger Dorne method. I expect hitters to patiently force opposing pitchers into higher and higher pitch counts, but don’t be afraid to pull the trigger on an perfect pitch early in the count – but those don’t come around very often. I expect hitters to know the difference. I expect our guys to minimize watching a called third strike. I want to see a team that stays on top of the ball and follows the maxim that base hits win ballgames. I think Preston Overbey will show significant improvement. I’m anxious to get some answers to some of the more unknown quantities. At this level, mental mistakes and problems with situational awareness are inexcusable. I anticipate being disappointed at times, but that is life. Overall, I think we will see an improvement over last year.
Stronger, more consistent at the plate.....
better fielding than last year…..talented but young on the mound….pitching improves as the season progresses.
I would like to see, at least early on,
An outside the box way of handling our pitching staff. We don’t have a lot of experience going for us so think we could do some interesting things to see what we have and how it develops. I don’t expect us to do anything of the sort. Hopefully, they will be able to handle those conventional roles.
Hitting wise, I am not a proponent of small ball, but that seems to be where we are going. It can be successful in college (and it does have the advantage of being useful in terms of forcing errors and other mistakes on the opposition).
Hopefully, we will be able to execute. And please, please, please, do not take the bat of Yarbrough’s hands unless we absolutely positively need a run to win. He should never, ever sacrifice unless that is the scenario. He is too legit a hitter.
I expect to see more of the same; hopeful we will execute better.

Righty-lefty matchup
As sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, Bianco will bench a right/left handed hitter batting .400+, for a lefty/righty batting .189. Every game. All season.

And then Cliff Godwin picks him up, Hercules style and tosses his midget ass out onto the field.
I swear to God, if Mike doesn’t stay the fuck out of Godwins way and let the sumbitch coach our boys at the plate, I’ll stab Mike in the face with a tire iron.
