Football Study Hall just posted some data

ranking all teams from 2005-2011. I don't pretend to understand how exactly they come up with the ranking, but I know that the quality of competition weighs heavily and each play is scored.

The best team is the 2005 Texas team followed by 2011 Alabama team. The SEC has 4 of the top 5.

A couple of observations

The 2011 Alabama team is number 1 followed by the 2008 Florida team (the one we beat)

In looking just at SEC teams, our 2008 team ranks 23rd overall.

MSU's best team was 2010, which ranks behind our 2009 team.

Now the bad news.

4 of the bottom 16 are Ole Miss teams. Interestingly, the 2011 team is ranked higher than the 2005 team and better than MSU's 2008 and 2005 teams, Vandy's 2010 teams, and Kentucky's 2005 team. We've got several losses to the worst teams in the recent history of the SEC.

If you really want to crap yourself - we're 4-4 against the 8 worst non Ole Miss teams of the last 7 years.

Some reason for hope - Arkansas State's 2005-2011 teams have an average rank of 666 (the mark of the beast) of all teams over that period. 2011 was ranked 392. That's a pretty significant improvement.
