RCRuiting: Ole Miss Rebels National Signing Day Open Thread

It's here! The day that, up until a few days ago, we've all been anxiously waiting for is finally here! National Signing Day 2012 is upon us and today, as with signing days past, we at the Cup will do our best to cover it in depth with insight, opinion, and as much e-snark as we can muster on a Wednesday morning.

The table below contains the players signed thus far. We will be updating it as maniacally as we can throughout the day as letters of intent are faxed in and announced by the school. We'll also be hosting an open thread where we will make various announcements when appropriate. Feel free to use it to inquire, opine, or tell dumb jokes. And I mean dumb jokes, y'all.

'Croot (Rivals.com Profile Linked) Position Height Weight School

Notes:

  • Cordarrelle Patterson, the #1 Juco Wideout, has committed to Tennessee over Ole Miss, Georgia, Auburn, and LSU.
  • Justin Taylor, the halfback out of Atlanta who was rumored to be dropping his Alabama commitment for Ole Miss, has signed with Kentucky, instead. That came seemingly out of nowhere.
  • Sheldon Dawson, who was torn between Ole Miss and Georgia, has signed with Georgia.
  • Kentrell Brice has honored his LA Tech commitment.
  • K Andy Pappanastos, DE Kameron Wood, and TE Mikhail Miller are among some of the grayshirts who will sign today. Miller and Wood will be getting scholarships this fall. Pappanastos will get one next year.

And the first new LOI comes in.

It’s Robert Conyers of Miami Florida.

If you all will recall, Conyers committed to Ole Miss after we parted ways with

Jake Meador, a gargantuan offensive lineman out of Indiana. Conyers was a commit to Matt Luke at Duke before he left for OM, and allegedly fits in a little better with Hugh Freeze’s offensive style.

Never understood the hype over Liggins

Bo Wallace seems like a much better recruit and he has 3 years of eligibility. Liggins has potential and I wish him the best (except against Ole Miss), but I always thought Wallace was better.

by rebelguest on Feb 1, 2012 7:53 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

The hype is entirely due to Liggins' potential.

Very rarely can a guy his size move as well as he can. If he can improve his throwing motion and accuracy (much harder than it sounds) and drop 30 pounds, he’ll be a great college quarterback.

If not, he’s got the size and speed to be a legit defensive end.

Will we not sign a single LB or DB today?

Haven’t seen any yet. We’ve got to have some LBs.

by E4 Button on Feb 1, 2012 8:27 AM EST reply actions

I don't know about Linebackers, I do expect some DBs though.

Trae Elston, out of Oxford, AL, is going to sign with Ole Miss, LSU, or Oklahoma State. On his Twitter this morning, he tweeted “Hotty Toddy!”…… right before Tweeting “Geaux Tigers” and “Go Pokes”

yes

Temario Strong is expected to sign and projects as an OLB. Collins (I can’t even begin to spell his first name without looking) is a JUCO Db that signed. We need more DBs right away. Fortunately, LB is not as big a need although we could certainly stand to have a new MLB to begin getting him ready for when Marry and Shackleford are gone.

by bababob on Feb 1, 2012 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

I also expect

some of the players listed at other positions (such as RB or WR) to wind up in the defensive backfield.

by bababob on Feb 1, 2012 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

When Marry and Shackleford are gone...

we’ll still have C.J. Johnson for a few more years. I think C.J. is gonna turn into a beast. Never hurts to add depth though.

by ManningExpress on Feb 1, 2012 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

At least for the moment, Johnson is playing DE.

That could change, but there’s no guarantee that it will. We absolutely need more options at MLB.

Added. Gracias.

I didn’t realize this, but Mather’s high school stats are eye-popping. He had over 2000 yards and 25 touchdowns as both a junior and a senior in high school. There’s potential there.

Also, Jaylon Walton to Georgia might not happen. I’d say we’ve got a 15% chance of landing the guy, only because his momma wants him in Oxford.

yes

just not for us. Rutgers just picked up a big surprise…

by bababob on Feb 1, 2012 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

something to think about

The Rutgers coach quit a week before signing day. The first, second and third choice for a replacement turned them down. In desperation, the DAY BEFORE SIGNING DAY, they named an assistant coach as head coach. Rutgers still will have a better recruiting class than ours. Not only is ours the worst in the SEC, There are CUSA and MAC teams with better recruiting classes than ours.

by bababob on Feb 1, 2012 10:31 AM EST reply actions

Well they had a shitload of high caliber commits well before Schiano left.

Most recruits aren’t going to decommit from some place to commit elsewhere with a week to go. They just aren’t. It’s not that Rutgers or their new head coach (Flood?) did something well moreso than it is that they were already in a pretty good situation.

Guys

The Ole Miss football program was/is in a state of utter disarray that noone could even begin to fathom. Anyone walking into this job was going to end up looking battered and bruised before they even got the seat warm on their new chair. ANYONE.

Freeze knew to some large degree (maybe not completely) the battle he was taking on and yet he still took the challenge. It is remarkable what he has been able to land in this class given the timing and state of things. Ward alone could have gone to any program he wanted.
Cut the man a little slack. Be a little realistic and/or optimistic here.

Next year’s recruiting class will be the word on this staff in the ‘crootin’ area.

Now lets see if these guys can coach! We need discipline, fundamentals, and luck. Our schedule next year is trial by Dante’s Inferno.

by ProphetMB on Feb 1, 2012 10:32 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

Part of the problem is name recognition.

Most people looked and Nutt’s replacement and went ‘Who’ Freeze? Maybe he will be the coaching equivelant of ‘Archie Who’ just stay out of the Hospital.

Let me start by saying, I agree...

Alabama fans are the worst in the universe. I live in Birmingham, and it is a daily struggle not to shoot myself in the face while listening to them wax poetic (read: string together a series of unintelligible grunts) about the greatness of Alabama football. BUT, isn’t this the same group that was hoping that OM fans would boo Liggins the other night for selecting LSU? I certainly would have loved to hear reverberating Hotty Toddy cheers to drown out everything that Liggins said after he picked up the LSU helmet so I can’t blame a Bama fan for yelling roll tide. I just blame the guy for being an Alabama fan in the first place.

Lost for words

Don’t know if state can score but they sure as hell are loading up on defensive line and line backer stud croots, it may be another long season for us for the third time in three years. However I do feel we will have an improvement from the past two years, unless coach kicks off some of the knuckleheads that we have, hope not. They are making dumb mistakes but they are talented

really?

How fast is he? Why did so many other schools want him if he is so slow? Why does Lemming, the most respected recruiting guru, rate him as having “good quickness” if he is slow. And as far as “fat”, if anything he needs to gain weight if he is truly 6’7" and 305 pounds. A frame that tall can afford to carry much more weight than that.

Hey what's up guy's I just joined.

I’m a freshman at Ole Miss, and I’ve gotta admit I grew up as a Tennessee fan, and always will be, but Ole Miss has become my second team. Anyways my point was to say I went to high school with Andy Pappanastos, and he’s actually is a really good kicker. He can consistently hit 40 yarders, and I think his career long is a 52 yarder.

Rankings

Question: Did we out-recruit mississippi state? In the long run it really doesnt matter and you can never tell how good a class is until a few years into school, but where do we rank as compared to state? Not that we use cow college as a standard or anything…

by MCchoctaw76 on Feb 1, 2012 8:56 PM EST reply actions

I think the consenus is their class is ranked ahead of us.

I don’t really care about the numbers per se, but what really concerns me is how many of the top in-state guess they got. That can’t continue.

It took Dan Mullen 3 years, a 2-10 season and coach firing to finally out-recruit Ole Miss.

That one division game each the past three years was against Ole Miss.

If anyone needed evidence to support the claim that Mississippi State’s sole self-determined purpose on this planet was to outdo Ole Miss in any- and everything, the past few years should suffice.

Even when we’re a 2-10 football team, their obsession continues.

A quick-witted comeback, you say? Hmmmm....

It should be subtle and nuanced, but balanced with direct undertones that communicate slight disdain, pity, and just a splash of hate for seasoning. Of course, one must consider the setting and the audience. And as with all things, delivery is a key component.

All things considered, I’d go with, “go fuck yourself to death, you shitheel abortion gone wrong.”

I guess by now that everyone here has seen the pathetically classless comment by the Mullet from the Farm Down Below US:

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen announced the Bulldogs’ 2012 signing class on Wednesday and immediately took aim at “other programs” preaching one thing and doing another.

Mullen denied that he was directing his comments at first-year Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze or anybody in particular, but here’s what Mullen had to say:
“A lot of people are going to get up and preach about what their program is, and when they get there, the guys all of the sudden realize it is something very different. A lot of people view themselves that way. They get up and preach but yet they don’t live it. These young men had the opportunity to not just hear us preach about our program but see that we actually live it. A lot of people go to church on Sundays and tell you one thing, but walk out the door and live their life very differently. We don’t do that here at Mississippi State. We live our lives the way we preach within our program.”

Geebus, he should run for governor.

State fans should be asking, “why didn’t we recruit a better QB?” or “how did we go from a 9-4 season to a 7-6 season?”, but instead Dan has them so whipped up into a frenzy with rhetoric and hatred for Ole Miss that they’re winning championships in their heads.

You really have to admire the man.
