Ole Miss vs Loyola Marymount: Four Factors

Here's how the Rebels (7-1) match up with the Loyola Marymount Lions (5-4) using the Four Factors. (National Rank in Parentheses)

The Rebels make a brief pit stop in Los Angeles to tangle with a Lions team that hasn’t play a game in 2 weeks. They shoot the ball very well from 3 (38.8%) and from the line (73.9%) but have struggled scoring efficiently inside the arc, shooting only 44.8% on 2-pointers. They are led by the explosive duo of Anthony Ireland (5’10, 21.1ppg, 4.8 apd, 2.0 spg, 47.1% 3P%) and Ashley Hamilton (6'7, 15.7ppg, 5.5 rpg, 55% 3P%). Those 2 also draw a combined 12 fouls a game, meaning the Rebels will have to be sharp defensively.

The emphasis for the Rebels tonight has to be taking care of the ball. After being one of the best in the country at taking care of the ball through 6 games, sloppy play has plagued them the last two. Some of that is likely attributable to a week off between games and the pressure of finals, but the play has to be cleaner tonight leading into the Diamondhead Classic. LMU has struggled to force turnovers this year and allowed teams to score very efficiently inside and out, so the Rebels should have a number of good looks at the basket.

Look for Martavious Newby to be the first one in off the bench (barring foul trouble for Summers). He is a disruptive force on defense, and with the explosive scoring capability of Ireland in particular, Newby will be called upon early and often to slow him down. While the Rebels’ offense has sputtered at times, this team is solid defensively and should be able to bottle up the Lions.

Both Marshall Henderson and Murphy Holloway need to step up in this one. LMU has struggled guarding the 3 this year. If Henderson will bide his time and not force his shot, the looks will come for him. When he gets hot, it opens up room down low for Holloway, et al, to operate without the fear of a double team, and that makes life much easier.
