Advanced Stats: A&M

I’ve been trying to figure out how a team wins turnover margin by 4 and has roughly equal yardage, but still loses. Being stopped on down has the same effect as a turnover, but A&M had one of those as well, so that nets out. A missed FG is just like a turn over, but that just takes us down to +3. I thought maybe this exercise would help me out, but it honest hasn’t. We were basically equal with A&M in every major stat except that we won turnovers. That should lead to a win in 99 out of 100 games, but, alas, WE ARE OLE MISS.

A&M was a little better, but they certainly didn’t crush us here. Their big win was in the 3rd quarter, but we held the ball so long there (25 plays vs 7 plays) that shouldn’t matter.

I’m sure a big part of A&M’s run percentage on passing downs was Johnny Football scrambling. We hit roughly the national average from last year.

We really zeroed in on Moncrief, but hats off to Logan and Sanders. Logan picked up several tough third downs and Sanders is making Neat regret pulling his groin. Four targets for the TEs, but only 1 catch for 7 yards – maybe they’re just not very good?

In passing situations, Sanders took a little bit of a back seat to Logan as the 2nd option.

We really leaned on Jeff Scott in this game. I think this is what an offensive game plan looks like for Freeze when the game is close all game and he’s going to who he trust the most.

Maybe this is where we lost the game. We picked up decent yards rushing overall (3.8 YPC overall), but it was hit or miss with big runs. This is one of the worst performances by our OL all year – even worse than against Alabama.

Wallace was just as accurate in passing situation as he was in standard, but not for nearly as many yards. It looks like A&M was taking away his first options and he had to dump it underneath. Logan did most of his damage on short crossing routes.

All in all, I still don’t understand how we lost the game. I may never. I took this one as hard as any loss in a long time – probably back to 7OT vs Arkansas or 2000 in Tubs return. I’m hurting.

I had to throw this together much quicker than normal – apologize for mistakes and typos.
