Tuesday Question: One of Quarterbacks

NASHVILLE, TN - SEPTEMBER 17: Tim Fugger #42 of the Vanderbilt Commodores pressures quarterback Zack Stoudt #8 of the Ole Miss Rebels at Vanderbilt Stadium on September 17, 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty Images)

Generally, we are the "authors" of "content" around here - "here" being a blog and not a message board. Recognize, we do, that you've come here not to contribute, but to consume. Nevertheless, there is the sporadic occasion where, either for our benefit or for to exercise the thinkifiers of the masses, we ask you a question. Today's question is . . .

Who do you want starting at quarterback for the rest of the season?

There are valid points for each.

Barry Brunetti is a younger player who would therefore have more time to progress. Coaches say he doesn't make a lot of poor decisions, and he could get it to the pass catching backs we currently have on the team. His downside appears to be that he is afraid to throw downfield, is short, and doesn't have good accuracy outside of fifteen to twenty yards.

Randall Mackey is a junior who has won consistently everywhere he's been. He is a capable runner but is known to make poor decisions with the football.

Zack Stoudt is the best pure passer and has displayed good accuracy (outside of deep passes). Unfortunately, he cannot run away from pressure and moves out of the pocket inexplicably making it easier for pass rushers to get to him.

It really doesn't matter.

Mackey can avoid pressure and pick up 8 or 9 yards for us on 3rd and 15 (before stepping out of bounds). He can throw it very far, but often to no on in particular.

Stoudt has decent accuracy, but as soon as the ball it looks like he’s waiting to get sacked, and he rarely knows where to move to avoid the sack.

Brunetti isn’t as fast as Mackey or as accurate as Stoudt.

This is going to be a long, long year.

Have They Even Scored

A touchdown in the Red Zone or any rushing TD’s against a Non Division 1-aa Team?

There is not really an SEC Caliber QB in the whole bunch. It’s the Cutcliffe era Law firm Flatt, Spurlock, and Lane all over again

Perception

What we perceive and what is reality are sometimes two very different situations. While you intense Internet philosophers cogitate on that, I will continue.

What I perceive when Stoudt is in the huddle is a calmness and sort of an order to their antics on offense. Before he throws it to a defender or before he is sacked, Stoudt does indeed look like a pro style qb. The offense huddles up well and moves into the play formation with a briskness and energy that inspires hope, and the ball is snapped and all hell breaks loose!

What I perceive when Mackey is in the huddle is all hell has already broken loose and dammit, snap the ball quick before it gets worse! Then we have a reenactment of the antics of the Keystone Cops with everyone running around with our OL chasing the DL trying to block somebody.

Haven’t seen enough of Brunetti to perceive much, except that he is rather short and appears not to be able to see much.

I voted for Stoudt. If we are going to get plastered, at least look good during the plastering.

Another viewpoint

Since the PC C-L is considered such a “provencial rag,” how about the SunHerald? A coast fan comments on rumors of Boone’s resignation.

“Joe Reynolds

Pete, it’s time for you to leave. You were brought on board by the Ole Miss admin. to preform the hatchet job on anything that the political correct deemed as unacceptable. This was not done not for any moral concerns but because you thought it would help more minority athletes come to Ole Miss and to try to persuade the elites for the northeast to like us. Well, how’s that working for you? Instead of unity you have brought disunity. Our caliber of athletes have not improved. The elites still do not like us. You have not increased the base of donors but rather depended on the donors that Ole Miss has to give more. You should leave. You have done way too much damage to the great institution of higher learning called Ole Miss. Don’t leave mad, just leave!!!!"

Just get the legislature....

to change the name of the state to West Florida.

Speaking of PC, why isn’t the Mascot an Ole Miss African American Bear? Don’t they know Black is not PC? Why is there an adjective anyway? Why couldn’t it be Ole Miss Bear. Were they afraid people would think it was another Memphis stripper pretending to be a coed in ‘Girls of the SEC’, or were they afraid people might think since its Mississippi it might be a white polar bear mascot? Why not a grizzley bear or a cave bear? A Smokey Bear or a Yogi Bear? Given the team we have this year a Pooh Bear might have been appropriate.

I'm pretty sure if we toss a couple million his way

Ole Brett will strap up. We can hide his true identity claiming he has the same horrible disease as Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button. Eh? Eh?

He wouldn’t even have to do shit. Just sling the daddy around the field. Reminiscent of that old ass cowboy in True Grit.

“Hey Brett, just show up on Saturdays and toss the ball to the team in red/blue/white …. and don’t send any fan pics of your penis during the game.”

I say Zack

Vandy aside, he’s been serviceable, and is really what we need in a QB.

With a better line and better playcalling, he’ll be decent, bordering on good.

Ambitious, but rubbish.

by UMBAI on Sep 27, 2011 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

2nd that.

He lost his confidence against Vandy but he will regain it. Mackey doesn’t want to throw the ball, and everyone seems to forget all the times he tucks it and runs 3 yards in a cloud of dust.

Mackey is a poor man’s Masoli. And Stoudt might be a poor man’s Jevan Snead, except I think he can be more consistent than Snead if gets the timing right with the WR.

The qb's would be more

Effective if the OL did its job. That lineup needs to be changed, but I don’t want to waste any freshmen year with this disaster. Just waiting on Malzahn to come..BTW Nutts buyout is being negotiated.

Stoudt

Though I’d bet Johnny-fucking-Unitas would look pretty bad with that line protecting him.

We need a NFL caliber QB that can play behind a horrendous O line… Can Archie be both QB and AD?

Mackey in the correct offense

Stoudt sucks in the shotgun or in a Pro style offense, he birddogs his recievers and kills us with turnovers everytime he’s on the field. He cannot run away from pressure, and there are times when the O Line has given him decent time to scan the field but he still dosen’t and then trys to trollop away from a Crashing Defensive end only to get sacked.

I'm simply legendary......

I don't think it would matter if we had Tom Brady

because our O Line is so awful he would get snapped in half. I will personally be glad when the day comes that the name Bradley Sowell is no longer associated with the words “Ole”, “Miss” and “Rebels”.
