Tuesday Question
Generally, we are the "authors" of "content" around here - "here" being a blog and not a message board. Recognize, we do, that you've come here not to contribute, but to consume. Nevertheless, there is the sporadic occasion where, either for our benefit or for to exercise the thinkifiers of the masses, we ask you a question. Today's question is . . .
How will the Rebels fare this season?
Predictable, I know. I just want something upon which we can all later look back and laugh. This time last year, I was singing the praises of our cornerbacks. Yeah. I know.
We're going to be releasing our season previews tomorrow, but I'll go ahead and roll mine out right here. Give us your own in the comments.

I'm going to be optimistic and say 6-6 (with an outside shot at 7-5).
My concerns are right in line with yours Juco (inexperienced front seven, over-hyped o-line, etc.), and I think there are a good number of teams that will absolutely destroy us (Alabama’s the big one), but I think we’ll hang with some teams we shouldn’t (LSU, Arkansas), and I have a feeling that Nutt will pull at least one big upset that helps us get to 6-6. My money for that upset, by the way, is LSU. We tend to play well against them, it’s at the end of the season, and Nutt seems to match up well against Miles.
i hope to God it's the LSU game
I’ve already gotten my tickets to that one. And the other 2 LSU games I’ve been to under Nutt are the ones we beat them. I don’t want to experience the flip side of that.
I still giggle a bit when I say Nutt

I think we can win 8 this season possibly 9 or 10 barring major injuries
We have a 3 headed monster at Tail Back and two of them are trying to get paid, Jeff Scott’s speed can not be game planned for. Guys who were starting last year are 2nd stringers, so I like Depth ALOT, O Line is a little bit overhyped but I feel really good running behind Matt Hall and Massie. Defense has a lot more speed, Middle LInebacker is big enough (Marry is 248 lbs) to bang and not get flushed in run support also has good speed. Garbutt is new but I think he brings above average cover skills for a linebacker to cover TE’s and Backs and he is also big enough to bang in the box. Ditto Ralph Williams. D Line has enough guys to rotate with Uriah, Martin, Bennet, Smith, Pena, and Gaines to rotate them out and keep them fresh and with a good strong push up the middle freeing up our linebackers to make plays, with Uriah having the potential to be a star player (Trust me I know talent). I’m most concerend about Wesley Pendelton at Corner he has natural speed but expect to see him get picked on early and often I think he will struggle intially and will get out muscled on jump balls by bigger recievers but will improve as the season progresses also not good in run support, I think since Temple has had that Hernia surgery he will play alot better and will be alot more mobile plus he’s solid in run support has enough savy to hold his own in coverage. Safeties are deep I think Sawyer has elite ball skills but not elite speed but not slow either, making him a great Free Safety. Damien Jackson is a Head Hunter at Strong Safety and will be a year improved.
Alot of people will be surprised by Wayne Dorsey he too is motivated by the NFL and will be much more affective last year after experience in the SEC, Kentrell Lockett I don’t know how healthy he will be this year honestly if he can get back to the old Ole 40 it’s Gravy……, Rivers and Whigam ares Solid with Rivers having the potential to be Great, Carlos Thompson has rare short yardage explosion and will have a big role as a 3rd down pass rushing specialist and will excel in that role. Jason Jones is also hurt 2nd knee injury when healthy he can give you an occasional pass rush and will be serviceable against the run.
WR’s Donte Moncrief will be a star from the start. he’s 6 foot 3 220 lbs and has been timed in the 4.38 range, but is a consistent 4.4 guy. He has great body control and can win the jump balls can also block. Melvin Harris aka Starvin Marvin finally will make plays this year as well and gives us a another big target with decent speed to get veritcal. JaMes is our possession guy that runs crisp smooth routes, we can count on him on 3rd down to make the catch and he’s not afraid to go across the middle. With guys like Vincent Sanders, Snoop and Tobias added in the rotation I see the potential for us to put alot of speed and talent the field especially with Gunter Brewer as their coach.
WE will finally use our TE’s this year Jamal Mosely and Ferbia are probably the most dangerous TE’s we’ve ever had talent wise at the same time. They will be Check Down Brunetti’s best friends and will surprisingly be the ones who will keep defenses who try to stack the box honest. I think we have the talent to match up with everybody on our schedule.
The key to this season is the turnover battle, if we win the turnover battle we can win a bunch of games because we have the talent in place.
I'm simply legendary......

Has anyone seen our schedule?
Six in the preseason top 25, 7 in the preseason top-35. Given what I saw last year the the tiny bit of optimism I approach every season with leads me to believe we will win 2 games we’re not supposed to win and 3 that we are. That will give us 5.
But since I know Jeff Sagarin is a faithful follower of the Cup, if we don’t have a top-5 SoS then I’ll never believe another thing is TRS-80 pumps out.
Is that our first official "Wait til next year"?
Kinda depressing. I’ve been on 6-6 (3-5) for a while, but I’m afraid I have to downgrade that to 5-7 (2-6) as well.
Too many tough games at home and what would be winnable games on the road.
Best case scenario for me is 7-5 (3-5)
I don’t think that is likely, but it is possible. (Wins there are all 4 OOC obviously, 2 out of these 3 – Vandy, UK, and MSU; and 1 surprise win).
Hoping for 6-6 (3-5).
Most likely is seppuku 5-7 (2-6) I guess.
Holy shit! Where’s the tylenol?!
tripleB.tumblr.com // msbeernut.com
Considering this year's recruiting class
and the buyout, I think Nutt survives 5-7 with staff changes. Namely Tyrone Nix.

I place a lot of weight on this first game.
If we beat BYU, I’d say 6-6 or 7-5
If we lose to BYU, I’d go 5-7 with 4-8 as my (please, God) worst case scenario.
I think we take Vandy and Kentucky, with Auburn and State as possible wins. I think we play Arkansas and LSU close (sans cigar). God I hate Alabama.

I'm not saying it's likely...
But yes, I can see a scenario where we beat BYU, SIU, Vandy, Georgia, Fresno, Auburn, Kentucky, La Tech, LSU, and State.
If I had a gun to my head and was told that I had to pick a number, I would probably split the difference and say 6-6, but I think all of those games are winnable. I see no way we beat Arkansas or Alabama, but I will gladly allow everyone to throw those in my face if we win.

I could see Ole Miss at 8-4 before the Dogs at 11-1.
And I think 8-4 is a long shot, to put it mildly.
Ole Miss: #1 in partying, mediocre in athletics and academics since 1848.
Have you seen...
State’s schedule? They have open dates or cupcake games before just about any major SEC game. Add in the fact that they get Auburn early while they are still trying to figure themselves out…and probably LSU with everyone still suspended….If State doesn’t win at least 7-8 it is absolutely pathetic!
Our schedule is tough and we have so many questions. We could be vastly improved from last year and still not have a much different record. I am hoping for 6-6 (with one of them being State) and signs of steady growth and improvement. Bama will kill us. Depending on how the secondary grows and matures…we could hang better with Ark than most are giving us credit for. Best case…with some luck… is 7 or 8 wins.
With our talented youth…we are primed for next season…especially if they can scratch and claw to .500 this year.
I hope State goes 11-1.......
,……and I hope that the 1 is Ole Miss, how stunning would it be for MSU to wake up thinking they would be going to a BCS Bowl, only to go to bed with Mullen thinking, “Well shit, what do I do for marketing now? This isn’t MSU’s state, or eve my state….”
As for Ole Miss, I see us being lucky enough to get to 7-5, that is assuming we beat BYU, if we don’t beat BYU, I think anything above 5 wins is wishful thinking…..
by GraveSituation on Aug 30, 2011 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Fuck that.
I hope they go 1-11, with their one win being over LSU. I want them to finally get over that hump, only to have it happen in a year when it means absolutely fuck-all. And, to paraphrase Barry Switzer, I’d like to hang half-a-hundred on them.
I agree with RightRev
all the way deep down in my soul. The only difference is I don’t even want them to beat LSU. I would rather eat a bullet than watch them go 11-1. And I mean physically eat and digest a bullet. The only time that would ever be acceptable is if we went 12-0, and even then I would still hate seeing them with 11 wins.

Dear God, if this is going to happen, please let it rain.
Ole Miss: #1 in partying, mediocre in athletics and academics since 1848.
7-5, 3-5 in the SEC
Wins: BYU, SIU, Vandy, Fresno, Kentucky, La Tech, Mississippi State
Losses: Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.
I'll just say this...
Anyone who thinks the weather is going to actually going to affect how well BYU plays is a moran.
We’ve moved into the 21st century here people. Highly specialized hydration fluids, misting fans, realistic playing surfaces, rotating schemes allowing 1 or 2 down players per series, halftime IV’s and Under Armor sta-dry t-shirts. Not to mention the ability to simulate almost any environment during practice via heaters, huge fans and wet jerseys.
Gone are the days of warm cups of water and pickle juice, fake plastic heat radiating playing surfaces, zero air circulation and insulating pads and undergarments that cold turn a brisk 60 degree morning into a 100 degree uniformed inferno.
BYU will not get beaten because it’s hot and humid. If we win, we’ll do so AND it will be hot and humid, not BECAUSE it’s hot and humid.
They had to go inside the other day
because it was 90. If it’s 100, don’t think it won’t make a difference. I don’t think it will affect anything in the first half necessarily, but having a couple of family members come from out there down here and hearing there comments, it’s safe to assume they’ve never played in 100 degree, 70% humidity conditions. It takes a whole lot out of you.
As for the playing surfaces, that turf they use now is hotter than grass for sure. Go on the field on Vaught Hemingway in the summer and you can feel the heat radiating up to your knees. Black cleats get hot as hell. Methinks it won’t make a huge difference, but it will hurt BYU much more than UM if it is in the mid 90’s with high humidity, especially towards the fourth quarter.

It won't be the heat but the humidity that will hurt...
although BYU practices at about 4600 ft and is longer winded than many other teams. I see the temperature index in MS and the high altitude training in UT as a wash.
Good luck and here’s to a hell of a game!
"All I wanna do is drive around in my truck and drink Jack Daniels... and they just don't understand."- Kenny Stabler
I should have made that point clearer
the heat will certainly be a factor, but not a game-changing one. I do think it will play into OM’s hands because BYU is used to training in 80’s, low humidity and wind. I think thickness with which the humidity hits one during outdoor activities can be borderline stifling. Like I said, if 90 was too hot for them to train outside, I have a hard time thinking Oxford will be conducive to their level of fitness.
Moreover, it’s not like they have access to MORE oxygen than Ole Miss players because their lungs are able to breathe more. Their bodies are just able to produce more red blood cells in high altitudes, which would have a negligible impact on their fitness at sea level. If the game were at BYU, they would have a decided advantage over Ole Miss.

Keep an eye on who is sucking wind in the 4th.
My guess is that both teams are gonna have cramping issues.
The deepest team has a distinct advantage in extremes of temperature due to substitutions.
I have no idea if either team has that advantage.
"All I wanna do is drive around in my truck and drink Jack Daniels... and they just don't understand."- Kenny Stabler
See,
the cramping is where I disagree. I think BYU will be much more likely to cramp up. That’s the entire point I’m making. If you haven’t been training in one extreme atmosphere, you won’t be prepared for it. We’ll have players cramp, but they’ve been outside in this heat since July. If we were in BYU, I’d expect our players to be breathing extremely heavy in the 2nd and 3rd quarter.
I expect them to be sweating their dicks off and have to adjust to the “thickness” of the air in the deep south. Your entire premise started as BYU being more fit because of altitude. After explaining how that doesn’t make a difference at sea level, you say the humidity will hurt. I’m making the point that they will be much more likely to cramp up after being ill-adjusted to the weather here, just as Ole Miss’ players would be in BYU. Fair enough?

See: Wyoming, 2004
Humidity and altitude are different monsters. When we made the trek up to Brokeback Stadium, our highly-trained SEC athletes spent half the game on breathing machines. Does that mean our humidity gives us an advantage? I don’t know. But humidity and altitude are definitely different kinds of hostile.

12-1 (7-1)
I’m really ready for this season. I really don’t think that anyone is all that good other than Alabama and South Carolina, with Florida having an outside chance. Predictions below:
BYU – Win, but it will be close
S. Ill. – Win, not close
Vandy – Win, but we will deserve to lose the game the way we play
Georgia – Win, only b/c Richt will be fired after they get their asses handed to them by Boise and USC
Fresno – Win, by a whole bunch of points
Bama – Loss, in overtime on a bad call
Arkansas – Win, they have no offensive line and they will be destroyed by injuries as a result
Auburn – Win, there’s a chance we still lose this one b/c they will score 30 points. I think we’ll score 31
Kentucky – Win, we’re not playing them in basketball
La. Tech – Win, not close
LSU – Win, we will have three pick 6s here
MSU – Win, we will beat the shit out of them, b/c there season will derail after Auburn and LSU beat them in Week 2 and 3

Bama still goes to ATL, beats USC, then on to the National Championship. We go to the Sugar and curb stomp TCU.

Feeling a little dicy
I can honestly also see 10-2 being a best case scenario and a 6-6 worst case scenario… Southern Illinois and La Tech should obviously be an easy 2 on the board. I think Nutt and the Rebs are sick of Vandy and will take care of business this year. I think Kentucky without Cobb makes it a less scary game and should be an easy 4 on the board for the Rebs. Now Fresno State and BYU is where it starts to get tougher. Fresno state has a heck of a running back and we all know about Jake Heap. However I think we take care of BYU at home and find a groove in time to handle the West Coast Bulldogs. So thats where I see our 6 win minimum. So here is where I am feeling like being nice, and lets be honest, a diehard hopeful. Arkansas, to me is overrated. Tyler Wilson looked good fillin in, but can he handle a full SEC schedule yet? I do not see a win over Alabama unless Richardson is hurt and their QB’s cant figure it out. Georgia is a dark horse in the NCAA this year but without Caleb King and AJ Green, just how comfortable will Richt be on a hot hot seat and Murray the Saviour be? LSU is going to be dealing with this Jefferson Marine kick to the head all season long and I dont think the mad hatter has much left in the hat, I mean come on.. spike the ball Coach, spike it. The school that must not be named is so so overrated it makes sick. The Rebs wil march into S*&$ville and send the cowbells home silent. Now Cam Newton didnt beat the Rebels, McCalebb and the running backs did. So if we can wrangle them in we have a legit shot to rattle the newbie QB.
10-2 IS NOT LIKELY. But i think an 8 win season isnt too much to ask for
by NCAA Rule Exceptions on Aug 30, 2011 7:44 PM EDT reply actions
Losing to BYU will not be good for the season
but it is a guarantee that we will go 2-10. Similarly, beating them does not mean we win more than 4 games, how often does a rebel team lose to a lesser opponent when expectations are high?
