"Ole Miss" is next y'all!!!1

For the conspiracy theory asshats who think Rebel the Black Bear is the work of some grand plan to remove every identifiable thing about Ole Miss, including her moniker, I relay this from the most recent Ole Miss Alumni Review:

The quote comes from a cover story about Michael Thompson and his marketing efforts involving VH:

"...but he's also taken the initiative that Ole Miss as a brand name develops and deepens across media outlets. That means appealing to the NCAA to change its media guidebooks so that broadcasters and media writers refer to "Ole Miss" instead of "Mississippi."

"Recently, Thompson was watching an Ole Miss baseball game on ESPN. It was one of the first games of the year. He noticed that on the score overlay, the team was listed as 'Mississippi'. So he snapped a photo of his TV with his phone and emailed the picture to ESPN's Southeastern Conference Representative and asked the name be changed. It was 'Ole Miss' for the rest of the year."

So the next time this is spouted, I'm going to trust the document efforts of our Senior Associate Athletics Director for Communications and Marketing. Not "REBELFAN645" on a Clarion Ledger comment who is upset he can't wave his Confederate flag anymore.

Also, the new band uniforms look very impressive.

Nobody's getting rid of it now.

But I can imagine a time 30 years from now, when if Ole Miss has suffered through 30 more years of being in the SEC cellar, and/or people still judge Ole Miss by what happened in 1962, somebody will look at the nickname Ole Miss and see its Confederate connection and will propose it be changed. Will it happen? I have no idea. It sounds rather farfetched at the moment. But I can definitely see it’s a possibility. But it won’t be anytime soon.

Ole Miss: #1 in partying, mediocre in athletics and academics since 1848.

band uniforms-

Will they be worn to more than 3 games this year? I understand it’s hot, but there’s nothing less appealing than a bad band in shorts and T-shirts at half-time.

They're a lighter material.

So not the wool heat death traps they used to have. So this might lead to more full-uniform games.

My Mascot for consistency!

Consistency please! Have Michael Thompson take a snapshot of the new band uniform and show me where it says Ole Miss!? I love and support the branding effort, but please, somebody with authority, please start to get it! Ole Miss has a great business school. Use it! And if it is a great idea to change the name used by sports writers, then apply it to our own uniforms as well! Like baseball, too! I love Ole Miss, but Administration has a long way to go, just to stop tripping over their own feet. “Hello Board; Your fans are on line 1. Pick up please.”

Define Great Business School.....

Define great business school? What are the qualifications you are basing that on?

I’m an Ole Miss grad, and we have plenty of truly great programs, I would not put the Business school in the top say ten programs we offer though……

You know those people who are always looking for something to bitch about? Like, they hit the lotto for a cool $250,000

but can’t stop bitching to everyone that it wasn’t the powerball.

How about the lady who marries a very intelligent, supportive, rich, good looking, funny, confident, attentive and loving man, but will NOT stop bitching at him to take the trash out or put his socks in the dirty laundry bin?

Or the person that finds half a kilo of Colombian bam bam hidden in a secret compartment in the trunk of the used car they just bought, but they bitch about having to sell it below normal cost because of the economy?

Like it or not, the block M is a part of our marketing. I too wish we would simply move to Ole Miss and nothing else. But as it stands, the block M and U of M are part of our school. The fact that Thompson is fighting the fight where it matters is a good thing. Relax. They are working on fixing some shit that really matters right now. $150mil fund raising, gameday changes to VHS, marketing and branding to the masses in light of this MSU mishegoss, facilities planning for basketball and NEZ, etc, etc, etc. Once these truly important issues have successfully been put to bed, I’ll march in the streets with you holding a sign that reads “OLE MISS AD’S NEED TO MAKE SURE THE FAUCETS HAVE RED AND BLUE HANDLES OR WE WON’T GO TO GAMES!!!!!!!!”

recent news pic

I do not have the url but our newspaper ran recent picture of player with “Rebel” in script on front, so they must have both. I am unfortunately out of state, but either way, you get the drift. Here is the result of google search of the one I saw:

Look, the bottom line is you're never going to make the full fanbase happy with uniform decisions.

If you put “Rebels,” then half the fanbase is going to be convinced the administration is doing away with “Ole Miss.” If you put “Ole Miss,” then they’re all going to say “Rebels” is going. It’s a lose-lose for the admin. The fact is this: both the “Ole Miss” script and the name “Rebels” are plastered all over the place. They’re not getting rid of either. In fact, just in the last year or two, they switched the midfield image back to the script from the M that was there for a while. All of this is a tempest in a teapot (which is, I think, what MattSaracen was getting at with his original post).
