A&M fires Sherman

Link

Looks like we just got some more competition. A&M appears to have fired Mike Sherman. I had honestly forgot that they were only 6-6 this year. Looks like they'll get a extra fresh start next year: new coach and new conference.

I would imagine that A&M shoots right up to the top of the best jobs available. Sumlin or Briles are already in Texas, maybe they're the frontrunners?

Larry Fedora is from College Station,

and I’ve heard that A&M is his dream job. He’ll be their fallback candidate. Since Sumlin will get to basically handpick which job he wants, I would assume that he would pick A&M over Arizona State. Art Briles’ name hasn’t been on any of the short lists I’ve seen for A&M, but it would really surprise me if they don’t pursue him. I’ve heard that Sumlin, Kirby Smart, Charlie Strong, and Fedora are their top 4.

I always say 'beer me.' It gets a laugh, like, a quarter of the time.

Let's hire him

He led the Packers to three division championships and, while at A&M, the Aggies finished a season in the Top 25 for the first time since 1999. He’s also recognized as a good recruiter and could probably bring some players with him. Here’s Maisel’s piece on Sherman’s firing:

On Thursday night, the university fired coach Mike Sherman after four seasons in which he went 25-25, including 6-6 this season. You can make the case that four seasons is long enough to determine whether a man can coach. After all, Kansas fired Turner Gill in half that time.

But saying that Sherman is a .500 coach doesn’t tell the story of how he built this team up over the last three seasons. Until this season, Sherman’s Aggies had improved from year to year: from 4-8 in 2008, his first season, to 6-7, 9-4, and now, 6-6.

Yeah, you don’t have to be Walter Camp to figure out that the Aggies underachieved. The 2011 season has been tough to stomach. Texas A&M lost five games this season by a total of 17 points. Two of the losses came in overtime.

I'm not a fan of hiring Sherman

but at this point, anyone who gives us shit for canning Cutcliffe way back when and doesn’t do the same to TAMU deserves to be shot in the kneecap.

The one we hate (and who hates us)

is “downwardly trending” SI columnist Stewart Mandel, not ESPN writer Ivan Maisel. I know it’s confusing.

Probably should have made this more clear

but I was just making a general statement, what with the climate of “ZOMG OLE MISS HIGH EXPECTATIONS UNREASONABLE FANS COACHING GRAVEYARD.” I knew Maisel and Mandel are different folks.

Thoughts on hiring Sherman:

(1) I would prefer not to be the SEC’s coaching recycling plant, and

(2) paragraph (1) shall not apply if said head coach is a winner

Competition and Opportunity

In Archie We Trust, but I do hope he could speed it up a little. Of course we all want the best fit for the job. I hope he will look at Sherman: Sherman has a successful pedigree in the pros and college, and he certainly turned around the culture and program at Texas A&M. They fired him after a single unexpectedly bad season, but he has shown he is a good coach, leader, and person. None of us knows who is the best fit, but I trust Archie and the search committee to find the best candidate.

I'm sure all of what you say about Sherman is true,

but if I were talking to him I’d have a hard time getting over the fact that his team blew at least 4 double-digit leads this season.

Per the 12th man blog

Sherman was less than thrilled to be coming to the SEC, which did not endear him to the AD, as well as, a 6-6 record. I think A&M is reluctant to hire another coach from Bama, and Kevin Sumlin is their 1rst choice, due to his location and success in Houston, which is down the road from college station. I think Art Briles is second choice. But I bet they get Sumlin right after the Confusa game.

Too much pride

Texas A&M is and will always be the bitch of OU and Texas in the Big 12. They thought they were too good for Dennis Franchione, who took the Aggies to 3 bowl games in 5 years, so they went out and got Scherman. The guy only had one winning season, but hell that season should have been enough to keep him around for a few more years. The guy tied for first in a conference division that I’d call 2nd in the country behind the SEC West. He beat OU for damn sake. And his 6-6 record is really a lot better than it shoes. If he wouldnt have pissed away a double digit 2nd half lead to Ok. State, Arkansas, and a few others, he’d still be right there on his Aggie Throne. To me, this is an even bigger mistake than the Cutcliffe firing. Welcome to the SEC Aggies.
