Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Tuesday Question: Part II

 (Ed.: F'paged.

xoxo,

Ivory Tower)

For you the Rebel faithful, what will it take to salvage the season...and possibly Nutt's and Nix's Ole Miss careers?   Obviously responses will vary.  Some will say nothing short of a championship will do, while others will say a respectable bowl appearance and a win over either State and LSU/Bama.  There are also the Ole Miss fans that long ago accepted the fact that WAOM and this kinda thing just happens to us.  After all, Masoli was cleared the day before; we'd used up all the good will the sports gods have for Ole Miss in a given period.  For me, I wouldn't be surprised if we did something ridiculous like compete for the West this year, just because we are Ole Miss.  I don't think that will actually happen but it could.  For this to be a good season, we just need to go to a bowl game.  Don't let this loss define our season.  Do some other things to make people remember the 2010 Rebels: spectacular plays, SEC wins, a winning season.  And the defense needs to start acting like fucking landsharks again--like when we play Arkansas I want Mallet to be on the ground so much that Gonzo's ass starts to hurt.  This loss will always sting, but if we do these things, it'll be an ok season.

Some would argue

I think it definitely puts a burden on him to step his game up. I don’t think he’ll be fired after this year, regardless of how the rest of the games go, but it’s a serious hit to the respect and fan-support he’s gained over the past two seasons.

I don't think he's seriously on the hot seat--yet.

But this moves him much closer to it than he was before. He’s not revered the same way anymore and until and/or unless he manages to win an SEC championship, probably won’t be the same way he was at Ole Miss again. Even if Ole Miss wins 9 games this season and goes to a good bowl again this loss will still linger. People barely remember Michigan beat Florida in a bowl game (Outback?) in 2007 after a good season, they remember Michigan lost to Appalachian State to start the season.

If Ole Miss doesn’t make a bowl I think you can safely say he’ll be on the hot seat for next season. This is after all the SEC and that loss to JSU will override a lot of good things that may (or very well may not) occur from here on out.

You had better hope it's his throwing arm.

If not, the way your defense is playing right now, he would more than likely still rips your asses apart. Good luck with that one. I hear Mallet loves to eat shark.

On another note, how ’bout that Arkansas defense? #16 nationally.
I know you guys like defensive rankings, so I thought I would share.

16th Nationally

after one game. Stats mean about as much as rankings at this point.

Right now, I'll take 6 wins...that would make this year a success to me.

I wouldn’t have been happy with that before Saturday, but I’d take it now.

Haha!

Ya, it doesn’t matter if one of your six LOSSES is to a DI-AA school.

about the character

I do recognize that we have that “jailbird thug low-life” Masoli on the team. However, as a Rebel, neither he nor his competing teammates have demonstrated anything but class through the entire process.

While I agree with your overall sentiment, I'm calling bullshit on graph 2.

His players quit? Houston Nutt quit! I’m a Nutt fan and think it’s retarded to suggest he be fired for what happened Saturday. But that abortion we witnessed falls squarely and totally on his shoulders. He didn’t just let his foot off the gas pedal after halftime, he slammed on the goddamn breaks. In attempting not to run up the score on his old mentor, he managed to 1) show a lack of respect for his mentor’s team and 2) completely blow what could/should/would have been an easy win. We let up on both offense and defense. Had we continued to score in the 3rd and 4th quarters, even a little, we keep the carrot far enough away from the Cocks that they probably don’t find the confidence they needed to climb back into the game. Yes, we have some problems on defense. But, in the first half, while we weren’t getting sacks, we were in the QB’s face most plays and disrupting their passing game. That rushing three linemen and prevent shit absolutely killed us.

I agree with your general assertion about Nutt on the hot seat.

But I don’t see how you can say the coaches had nothing to do with it. The playcalling drastically changed offensively and never changed defensively as the game went on. In other words, the offense went conservative and the defense never adjusted. Besides, if the players do quit, it’s the coaches’ job to fire them back up.

I will say this, Nutt needs to turn Ole Miss around for the rest of the season, or he WILL be on the hot seat next year.

by Wild Rebel on Sep 7, 2010 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

We need to go bowling.

Even if it’s just the Music City Bowl. The defense needs to get really pissed off and stingy. Houston needs to go for the throat until the clock in the 4th quarter hits 0:00 for the rest of the season. And we need to beat State, and either LSU or Arkansas. Beating Bama would also completely revive the season, unlikely as it may be.

I play for keeps.

wow

I knew our fan base was crazy and fickle…but I didn’t know we were this close to Bama, Arkansas, and Tenn levels. One bad….very bad….failure does not do away with the past two years of good will that quickly. We went endured 3 years of Coach O! We have gone to 2 Cotton Bowls with Nutt and Nix…and have the makings of an incredible recruiting class.
Everyone knew this was going to be a down year….regardless of how the Masoli issue enabled us to hide that fact away in the back of our ever hopeful minds.
Bowl eligibility is all I ever asked for this year. Given our weaknesses I thought that might be an obtainable goal. Beat the snot out of The School Beneath Us…be competitive in the rest of the SEC…with possible one beat-down handed to us. Show promise for next year.
Our coaches got exposed in the second half of the horror that was last Sat. But hopefully it was a painful lesson. Never take your foot off the gas. Nice guys get taken advantage of. The coaches and team deserve more support than calling for their firing after one loss or one bad year.

by ProphetMB on Sep 7, 2010 6:52 PM EDT reply actions   2 recs

I completely agree

There is no reason to call for heads in this situation b/c shit happens and that’s why the game is played…both halves. C’est la vie. Some would disagree. I don’t think it’s unreasonable, however, to ask for something that shows the coaches and players learned from this painful lesson.

A bowl game would be nice

preferably not in Shreveport. And I also wish we wouldn’t open the season against 1-AA schools. I know next year we will get made to look like ass clowns by Boise State to open up the season, but with the Memphis “rivalry” on hold, I think it would be to Ole Miss’ advantage to start scheduling season openers against teams from other big conferences. I’m not saying we need to schedule powerhouses, but why can’t we schedule the NC State’s or Minnesota’s, or Iowa State’s of the world. I think it does the team a great disservice to start out against truly poor opposition. As we saw last weekend, we have nothing to gain from winning the game, and everything to lose (hopefully not recruits and such).

Take last season for example, you cannot convince me we would have lost to SC if we’d played a real opponent before the 3rd game. That game came down to SC already having played a tough game against UGA, and that got them over the edge against us. Would we win openers everytime against power conference teams? No, but then again, we don’t win openers against 1-AA teams everytime either. I want the team ready to go come SEC time, and sadly, the loss on Saturday may have inadvertently accomplished that this year. Even if we have one less home game every other year or third year, I think the lost revenues would be worth it if it could help the team be ready to go and compete for the West. Really, how often do we open SEC play 2-0. It doesn’t happen often, certainly not often enough given that Vandy is always one of the first 2.

Shreveport isn't an option this year!

Hurrah!

That said, I’d much prefer Nashville to Memphis, and I’d prefer Jacksonville to Nashville, but that’s not likely to happen.

And here's a lighthouse keeper being beheaded by a laser beam!

The Broncos

Just a thought, but if Boise St. were to go to a BCS game, wouldn’t a victory over them a year from now make this season’s opener not seem as bad?

Tulane

We need to put up 100 points on Tulane… I know people bitch and moan when Florida or Alabama blows up on some Louisiana directional school or FAU but considering the week we just had would anyone really complain….well…other than Mark May?

Mark May

is a asshat of the highest order. If Mark May hit his head, decided he wanted to do something nice, and offered to give his entire salary to Ole Miss, I’d reject it solely because he such a royal prick. I wish only the worst kind of death and long suffering in hell for him.
