Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

From The Heart - Romaro Miller

ED: HT goes to EtOHReb for this one. Former Rebel quarterback Romaro Miller wrote this on the Spirit board today and it is something we all should really read and think about. The guy started for our Rebs under center for three seasons so I do and cannot doubt a single drop of the passion and sincerity this post is dripping with. Seriously, just read it.

Carry the fight to the opponent and keep it there for 60 Minutes

Any time you jump out and do what I am about to do, you must weigh your pros and cons.

I have always been a big reader of The Spirit, but as an ex-player I kept my posting at bay. I have talked to countless ex-players and they all support what I am about to write. I feel that I should share some thoughts and concerns with my fellow Reb fans with whom I share my love for Ole Miss and the Ole Miss football team. All of us that have this same passion know that we all bleed red and blue.

As an ex-player there were certain things that got me focused and motivated me to play the game hard for those 60 minutes. David Cutcliffe was the coach at the time. The team would always start pregame chants and we would repeat them before every game as we came out of the tunnel down to the field. My favorite was Carry The Fight To The Opponent And Keep It There For 60 Minutes. Now whether we did that or not I guess is debatable in your eyes perhaps, but that was our goal.

This has been on my mind and in my heart all year. I am seeing something that is very hard for me to take sitting down as a former OM football player. I feel that it is time some things stop right here and some of our fans get called on the carpet.

Star-divide

Everyone loves being a winner. It is during the difficult times when we may not win that is my concern. First and foremost, the team is not my concern. We have some incredible talent and I know that our team will get there. I do have a real concern in our fans though. It seems when we win and we are ahead in a game our fans leave the game and go to the grove. When we are losing, our fans, instead of staying when our team needs us the most, leave out of frustration. At halftime, some of our fans and students leave and go to the grove to get something to eat and drink. This is a problem because when the game starts back they aren’t in their seats to kick the second half off.

I have pondered this over and over again. Is it cool as a fan to sit in the stands and watch my Rebels bleed, sweat, and work hard or is it cooler to be in the grove with food and drink in hand while not supporting my Rebels who are working hard on the field to win that game?

The first three home games were all prime examples. The 1st half of these games the atmosphere was great.

Listen, I have been in the pit many times at Ole Miss and all over the SEC. Trust me, when I say this, the TEAM FEEDS OFF YOU! We had a great first half crowd and then I begin to see fans not come back after halftime. For some reason we have made "The Grove" the pinnacle of a game weekend at Ole Miss. It’s a wonderful place, but the game has to be the main attraction.

I am asking every fan to understand that any football team feeds off of the energy of the fans inside the stadium. This is nothing new to any of you. You have seen momentum become a game changer with fans time and time again.

Saturday night in the first half against Fresno the stadium was loud and the players were jumping around getting what they call crunk.

In the 3rd quarter the crowd left and the team’s energy went flat. The D gave up 10 in the 1st half and a lot more in the 2nd just like the JSU game. Ask yourself, how was the atmosphere for Vandy? Ask yourself this question: If I was on the field playing in front of less than 40,000 fans when there were 55,000 in there the first half, could I get up to play? Most will lie and say as long you’re on the field that you could. I will say those guys are rare, off the top of my head Ray Lewis and he is a special player. Trust me when I say this but it is hard to motivate yourself to maximum output without maximum support.

11 o'clock kickoffs? Don't even get me started on that. Be honest with yourself and think about Arkansas , Auburn or even MSU fans on TV, it looks a lot different. We have the only fan base in the SEC that the team has to get the crowd up. We need to stop making excuses.

At other schools fans get the team up with their energy. We have true SEC crowds when we play an LSU or a Bama, but when we play JSU or Fresno State we may as well have a South Panola crowd in the second half.

Heck, I can’t help but wonder what would happen if we closed the beloved Grove at halftime.

I would bet my next month’s check that if we had Saturday night’s 1st half crowd for the whole game against Vandy and the JSU game WE WIN. If you don’t believe that ask any player or even ex-player.

This football team along with those before and after will bust their humps for Ole Miss in the months of January, February and March when not a soul is looking. Then for the fans to come to the games and not cheer, or to leave, is a bit disheartening. Really it is utterly ridiculous.

Kentrell Locket tore his ACL fighting for the fans, the love of the game and the WIN. In addition, about 100 more guys do this every Saturday for us, for the love of Ole Miss and ultimately for the WIN and so we can go to work on Monday to brag.

I know that I am more than likely to get roasted for telling the truth but that is the chance I am willing to take for the love of my team and my university. It is worth the sacrifice if that is what it takes.

Fans, we need you all of the time, not just half of the time.

Our coaches work hard to get prospects to campus. If we bring them to a game and they see the 2nd half crowd with most of them gone, my feeling is they will want no part of Oxford, particularly if they go to the State game against Alcorn State where there are 55,000 fans ringing the hell out of those damn bells.

I just hope like hell our recruits were not there to see MSU tear down their goal posts after they beat Georgia – something our fans made fun of them for.

Let’s say AK has a great basketball recruit in town and he goes to the football games and sees the crowd leaving, how do you all think that this helps Ole Miss? With us fans, me included, these are the issues our coaches have to overcome.

Students, I left after the game Saturday and went to the square. I felt the same way you did in less time with my Vodka and Cranberry. I missed nothing.

If Coach Nutt asks everyone to wear blue, then Cobra, don’t let high powered school officials on the field in RED.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt I love our military, but somehow we have got to make sure that when the center is about to snap for the extra point, we don’t shoot the cannon!

Whoever is in charge of the game day experiences at Ole Miss, we need a lot more. Give fans more reason to stay by making the atmosphere more exciting.

I drive around all day in my job and I can’t wait to see the 1st OM billboard. Lord knows I’m tired of the Leghumper billboards everywhere.

Coach Nutt, AK, From Dixie With Love, or Colonel Reb may not be here forever but the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) which we love will be.

This whole thing is about teamwork and the fans’ job in this puzzle is to cheer. I am doing this because I feel we are in this together. I hope that each of you will take this to heart. It’s time we demand the best from ourselves and everyone connected to our University.

I learned a long time ago to control what you can control and we can control our HOME field. I will be at the next game early in RED and loud, and I will stay until the end, but the question is will my 60,000 plus friends and fellow fans do the same? My greatest hope is that you say YES, that you will. I hope that you will stay the whole game. I hope that you will be in your seats after halftime. I hope that you will cheer loudly. I hope that you will send cheers of encouragement even on the most screwed up plays.

Obviously, I am not really preaching to many Spirit subscribers on this issue. We are the diehards, but we can do our part in this too. Every one of us needs to spread this message to other Rebel fans. It’s time we, as fans, accept this responsibility and ask others to do the same.

I wish they would go post this in Farley Hall and all the fraternity houses

I have only been out of school for 5 years, so I’m not trying to sound like an old fart when I say this, but we wouldn’t have dreamed of leaving at halftime – especially in a game where our offense is rolling. What is more fun than watching your offense break big play after big play? What got into our students this year that they would leave in the middle of the Fresno game?

The DM already has it. We'll see if it's printed.

To be honest, it’s quite embarrassing that we even have to say these things in open conversation. I was at the game this weekend and I thought the exact same things he said in this letter. I stayed till the end of the game.

In Deacon Hall where the freshman players live there’s a sign, it reads: “We may not win every game, but we’ll never lose a party.” I think some take that saying a little too seriously. I know we’re a party school by reputation, but at some point even an alcoholic realizes something is terribly wrong. As he passes out in his own vomit, of course.

Why can't I rec this more than once?

I received a survey from the Ole Miss athletic department today, because I am a season ticket holder. The survey was on the Ole Miss game day experience. There was an entire page dedicated to crowd noise. Hopefully, this survey means that the administration is going to attempt to get the crowd (especially the students) more involved in the game. Hopefully.

Pretty sure the main point of having that survey was to inform the public that they're doing a shitty job of supporting the team...

when the fans read all the stuff about whether or not it’s important that they act like they give a fuck, the admin hopes these fans will realize they’re part of the problem; overall, I expect this note from Romaro to do more for the gameday exper. than the results of this survey

Our school needs to do a better job of segregating (no, not like that) older people.

If you’re frail ‘n’ shit, I’m cool with you sitting, but we need a section for the geriactrics to enjoy the game safely just like we need a section for students, the band, recruits, etc.

by The Ghost of Jay Cutler on Sep 28, 2010 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

My thoughts exactly...

And maybe even have some sections reserved for us crazy assholes that actually like to stand up the entire game. I sit when “i’m supposed to” and stuff to be respectful, but damn it would be awesome to have a section for us non-student fans to stand and get crunk n shit in without having to worry about getting bitched at.

by missgrove on Sep 29, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I like this idea.

I’m sometimes the only guy in my whole section making noise. It’s been a couple of years but I’ve gotten a few comments at sporting events (not just Ole Miss football games).

There are a few guys in the section next to mine who make a lot of noise. They tend to be a little negative about the team, which I could sometimes do without, but at least you can tell they care. We need more of that in the stadium.

by Wild Rebel on Sep 28, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought of this a long time ago...

there should be a section – maybe like section A, close to the band and student section for new graduates.

Jeez, the comment makes it pretty clear the home side is the ultra lame side.

And I mean ultra. Not that the visitor side is off the hook or anything, but the home side is fuckin’ pathetic.

by rpmjr on Sep 28, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Glad Romaro had the guts to say this.

I can understand why he’d be reluctant as, being a former player, anything he says would be magnified, and taken the wrong way, that would be bad and probably make him some enemies. But somebody with some clout needed to say it.

I remember the cannon firing right before a PAT too. It’s a wonder Rose didn’t miss that kick, particularly considering the cannon was practically right in front of him. I give him credit for remaining calm. That might have been the one time I wouldn’t have gotten too mad about a kicker missing a PAT.

One thing I’ve never understood: how do these people have enough money to burn they can spend $50 or so a game and just walk out at halftime?

by Wild Rebel on Sep 28, 2010 4:28 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I was just thinking...

… today about what could we do better to keep the atmosphere pumped in the third quarter. Honestly, it’s hard maintaining the energy in the down time when we have Ford F-150 and ATT commercials on the jumbotron! I mean… play highlights from last couple of years or something, not advertise insurrance…

The music has gotten significantly better (at the JSU game, the same song was played the entire game), but I still feel like we could pick some songs that have more pump-potential. Muse has like 50 songs that could definitely get the job done.

by Nerd the Rebel on Sep 28, 2010 4:33 PM EDT reply actions

I remember at LSU 2003, just at the end of halftime they beamed in the Space station guys who did another AYR?

I don’t think you have to go so far as to get a second celebrity, but doing an organized Are You Ready on the jumbotron(maybe players/cheerleaders/band/Shep/someone) actually gives the fans a chance to sort of refocus on the game atmosphere…I mentioned this in the survey. Anyone agree?

by EtOHReb on Sep 28, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Shit I’d bet Shep would be down for it. Great idea. Hell they could do a video of players asking AYR. Say WR’s one game DL the next and so on.

Geez, It's not like we are the Tampa Bay Rays

People go to the games and generally stay most of the game. I know it’s not fair, but fans don’t get overly excited about playing FCS and low tier FBS schools. The only true way to keep fans in the stands is to consistently play well (not even necessarily win). It ultimately comes down to the product on the field. The die hard fan will be there regardless but the team is going to lose the casual fan pretty quick if the game play isn’t exciting and competitive. I hate that this is the case but it is reality. I think Ro’s got some good ideas but you can’t change Ole Miss fan culture overnight.

gameday atmosphere

love the thought of selling 1 or 2 sections to season ticket holders that dont mind people standing the whole game (hell, i’ll buy my wife a seat in the old people section if i have too!).

also, i think the gameday music, experience etc… should be slightly different for morning games than night games. obviously, people are in different moods for the morning game vs the night. I’d use more crowd participation for mornings and more (pump up the crowd type music) at night.

Speaking of music....why can't for once, we be ahead of the curve and not 5 years behind...

I used to love that song that everyone in the country uses to make the fans jump up and down(the one we all sing to with repeated “Oh” noises; now…it’s just old; we need to find the one that everyone else is gonna use for the next 5 years;

as a result, I’ve decided I’m immediately going to start searching the internet for “fresh” techno/hipityhopity releases….if you find this hillarious, good because I’m laughing at myself right now

Hell…for me it doesn’t even HAVE to me more current….just better; I want some good southern rock OR something new but anything that will get the crowd pumped; Someone mentioned Muse-I HATE Muse, but I think that one song that got popular afew months ago(uprising??) would sound great during a game; There has to be someone in that office younger than 48 that listens to something other than Dwight Yoakem and Dido.

I think it’d be hard to say that “Stockholm Syndrome”, “Plug-In Baby”, “Knights of Cydonia”, or “Butterflies and Hurricanes” wouldn’t raise the energy the stadium’s energy level.

I would quit band

if we started playing Fucking Lady Gaga. It’s bad enough having people singing the rhythm to “Bad Romance” when they want the crowd to get loud.

We have started playing a couple new stand tunes this year: “Stand Up and Get Crunk” and “Talkin’ Out the Side of Your Neck” off the top of my head, maybe a couple others that I can’t remember right now, plus “You’ll Never Walk Alone” after the game.

As for Southern Rock…find me some that’s easily adapted for marching band and I’ll suggest it.

I am SO VERY WITH YOU in this!

Twelve years ago I got a Pride of the South cd. It was AWESOME….in 1999.

I got a 2000 and some later cd….I don’t even remember the year…because nearly EVERY track was IDENTICAL to the 1999 disc except for the various half-time specials they included after the spirit music.

WHAT is NOVEL about a band cd if every year the songs are the same? And if you’re wondering why I’m focusing on the cd, it’s because the cd reflects the game tunes.

I am sick to death of the “We’re Gonna Beat the Hell Outta You” song, Iron Man, and whatever tired shit they offer. It’s tired and needs to be RE-tired. When I go to a Rebel game….football OR basketball…I want DIXIE, FORWARD REBELS, FDWL (spare me the “But Dr. Dan cut it…” because THAT is BULLSHIT!), and some NEW ideas for spirit songs that are cool and exciting, rather than the same stuff that rocked me 12 YEARS ago!

And while I’m at it, what the hell happened to our band? JSU’s band sounded more like a college band than ours did! They played the best rendition of “Dixie” I have EVER heard.

To quote a fraternity brother of mine with whom I was discussing that fiasco (he was in Mobile, so he missed it), “So, they came to OUR house, whipped our ass, and then just for fun played OUR fight song in our face on their way out? How humiliating!”

Humiliating indeed. And I am humiliated FOR our band when lsu brings its band to the Vaught and just DESTROYS the stadium with their brass section. When Dr. Luther Snavely was the director, we had a REAL sound. It was lively; it was fluid. The current guy and staff are producing stiff, stilted music that sounds no different (translate that: no IMPROVEMENT…same, identical sound) now from a decade ago.

From the Pride of the South web page: David Willson is in his twentieth year as Director of Bands at the University of Mississippi. Under his leadership the band has developed into a truly outstanding university band and has doubled in membership. A Jackson, MS native who attended Provine High School and the University of Mississippi, Mr. Willson has directed bands in Mississippi at Independence, Columbus and Clinton. His bands have consistently won awards at the state and national level.

BTW…Dr. Snavely went from Ole Miss to Notre Dame as their band director. Sad.

Remember in November.

JSU's band

is also comprised almost entirely of music majors and practices six or seven hours per day. A quarter of the Pride of the South (and that’s probably a fairly liberal guesstimate) are music majors, and the band practices 2 hours a day.

Do the math.

We love it in baseball, we’ll love it in football. Also, “Stereo Love” is one of my new favorite pump up music even though it came out last year.

They played this during games last year.

And it worked in getting people fired up. It’s not quite the same as at baseball games but it went pretty well, I thought. I don’t know why they aren’t still doing that.

Last week against Fresno State, the production folks did a great job pre-game. I thought playing Genesis’ “In the Air Tonight” just before kick-off was clutch.

They have gotten much better. We could still have “Hot-ty Tod-dy” guy on the field. /jinx’ddamnit

One word...

Vuvuzelas.

Okay, so maybe that won’t work. But Romaro said what needed to be said and I support it. I’m probably a “bad fan” in that I haven’t bought season tickets (give me a break, house payments aren’t cheap) and don’t go to nearly as many games as I should. I did three last year and outside of when I was an enrolled student that was a record for me. But, that was when I still had a relative on the faculty with tickets. Now, if someone can come up with a ticket for me I will be there at 11:00 AM sharp, wearing red and screaming my lungs out until the last whistle is blown. Oh, and mooching off your tent goodies…

Romaro is good people. I remember when he was a redshirt freshman; I ran into him at a McDonalds in West Point right after the Patridge-to-Peterson-2-pt-conversion Egg Bowl . He hadn’t even played a down yet, but he signed my car flag anyway.

LOL!

Yeeeeeeahh…I’m pretty sure the administration would be afraid to turn these loose on the drunken student section…although if they DID refuse, it would be funny to fight the refusal by accusing them of RACISM!

They could print them with Ole Miss Student Logos or some such like they did back in 2006 with the season opener. The programming board distributed free cups to the students entering the stadium with the reminder they could get it filled once for free. They paid for it out of that exorbitant “programming fee” all students pay in their tuition. Vuvuzelas couldn’t cost much more to produce than a plastic cup!

I would like to say thanks to Romaro for being a true Rebel.

At the Fresno game, I was asked by a 60something couple not to cheer so loudly. And, no, I wasn’t cursing; I was just too loud for them with my cheering for our defense. I gave them my best bewildered look as I said, “But I’m cheering for our team?!?”

2 seats down from me sat the Legendary Seth Adams. I did not see him cheer once the whole game. After witnessing that this weekend, I was very relieved that some of our former players still have passion for Ole Miss’ football team.

Let me start by saying I whole heartedly agree with Romaro when things are on the up and up.

But this argument descends into a “chicken or the egg” discussion at it’s most basic foundation.

When times are bad, the product on the field blows and it’s OBVIOUS the players are NOT putting out as Romaro suggests, are we STILL expected to blowout our gaskets, wallets and ear drums in the name of fandom?

As I’ve said in other posts on this subject, when the team is putting out, playing hard, talented and well coached (all these things are NOT too much to ask in the SEC), our fans and gameday atmosphere are un-matched.

Orgerons tenure (and games we’ve played that REMIND us of those days) are certainly exempt, no?

One final point. Yes, leaving early blows. I never, EVER do it… EVER. But if we’re up by 35 on a patsy team, should the team really need the entire crowd to close it out? SHOULD we need the crowd to close out against fucking JSU and Vandy?

Put it this way, Bama, LSU, Aub, UF and UGA players would laugh in all our faces if we suggested that they REQUIRE fans to be super duper loud and crazy in the last 10 minutes of the 4th to beat the dregs of their schedule. Those teams players and coaches have swagga by the truckload. Fuckers could win on the road, with ZERO fans and William Hong blaring down on the field at jet engine volumes. Can’t we expect some attitude and confidence from our own players too?

I would really like Romaro’s opinion on the other side of this issue. It’s a what comes first situation. Should we literally support garbage because it’s our job? Or are we, the fans, supposed to make our feelings known based on the product on the field. Look at the Saints. We wore bags on our heads for Christs sake. We never showed up, we left early. For years as a kid growing up in NOLA, tickets were free, and you only went when there was literally NOTHING else to do and you sure as shit didn’t tell your friends on Monday. The organization got it’s shit together, put a product on the field and proved to the fans that they took this shit seriously. Now there’s a 5 year waiting list, merchandise sales are through the roof and the Saints ticket is a rare and delightful commodity. I know there’s an NFL vs NCAA angle here. And the purists are going to use the “student athlete” tag to dismiss my argument. But it’s not that simple. These players ARE paid to play, in scholarships. They are recruited, trained, taught and prepared to WIN games, not just compete and play good ’nough. After their done, they have a free degree, a possible chance at the NFL and at minimum, an education to fall back on should sports not pan out. So honestly, they are very similar.

Again, I agree with Romaro when we are doing average to well. I also, personally, do not leave ever. When I’m there, I’m there for the entire game, no less. I also do not agree with the “Grove comes first” mentality. I love the Grove and I enjoy it fully before and after, but never, ever during. Students have no excuse either. Get there early, be loud and don’t you dare leave before it’s over. I guess I’m talking about when we play badly, be it one game or 36 in a row. What does he/they expect then?

Just sayin.

Some good points there.

I will say that unlike the NFL, a shitty rebel team has to bring in recruits to get better. Half empty stadiums don’t help that. Look at how long South Carolina sucked and how they consistently filled a good sized stadium.

by Littlerockrebelfan on Sep 28, 2010 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Is Miller suggesting the crowd tuning out at 31-10 against JSU cost us the game?

I stayed the entire JSU game, till Vandy scored 28, and until Bolden put the last one in against Fresno, so I don’t think I’m the problem. But I don’t think that many leave at halftime. We (fans) fall asleep at halftime.

Is there anything different that other schools do to get crowds fired up after half? More rap? More kid-rock?

I understand the pull of the Grove

And that many people go to Oxford just for the Grove every weekend. And it’s fine with me if you go to Oxford every weekend for 10 years and never once enter the stadium. However, once you walk through the entrance to Vaught-Hemingway, you’ve made the decision to be at the game. Leaving 5 minutes early to beat traffic is one thing. But leaving at halftime, or at the start of the 4th quarter, just to go back to the Grove, shows the players you don’t care. I understand trying to send a message that the product on the field is unacceptable. But to the players, it seems more like you care about making tracks to that deviled egg and that brown liquor than supporting the blood, sweat, and tears they pour out on the field, particularly when it’s not always their fault, but the fault of those middle-aged guys on the sidelines with clipboards and headsets.

Yeah. They should be able to close. But the 12th man is real, and we all know how important morale is to a football team. Don’t give them any excuses for not playing with everything they’ve got. We all want to win.

by allicolls on Sep 28, 2010 6:17 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I agree 100% about people leaving at the half.

And I’m not talking about that. I also agree about our students leaving early, people showing up after the 1st qtr, etc. Those people have no souls, and should be hung by their eye lids from the walls of the upper decks. People that come late and leave early are assholes, and are the majority of the problem Romaro is addressing. So he and I and you are all in agreement.

I was simply provoking thought (hopefully Romaro’s) about what fans are supposed to do when the product truly blows ass. When the players have clearly given up. When the coaches are clearly mailing it in. He’s completely right in the context of his letter, and he has my full support. But I’m asking what we’re supposed to do when we show up like LSU 2003, and we get Arkansas 2007 (blown out 44-8) results?

And as an added bonus, let’s talk about finishing against JSU when you’re up 31-10 at half. People who left at half time during that game, fuck them. Pansies, the lot of them. But seriously, is our team that freakin emotionally dependent that they folded because of the crowd dropping by 15K during the second half? If he’s really suggesting that, we have much bigger issues. We need animals on our team. Certifiable, nasty, angry, glass eating, blood drinking, satan fucking mad men. If we have a team full of sensitive, feelings oriented, clap for me or I’ll feel bad and play worse pansies, we have much… bigger… problems.

I’m trying to find the middle ground. Or at least, a players opinion on the proper course of action for disgruntled fans.

by OxpatchReb on Sep 28, 2010 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, they shouldn't NEED a full, loud stadium to close against JSU.

And I think there is a lack of “©ertifiable, nasty, angry, glass eating, blood drinking, satan fucking mad men” on the team. I don’t know what the answer to that is. I do think that if we were able to create a nasty, intense crowd atmosphere, it would seep into the players. But I also think the reverse is true – if we had guys out there playing like animals, that would inspire the crowd to stay in the stadium and stay in the game. It’s a conundrum, but the best answer I can give is that I’m gonna stay for the whole game, cheer on the team…loudly, and stand up when I want to, and I will keep doing these things even when I get old. I see this as my duty as a fan and wish everyone else did too.

Heard about this on the radio...

It was on MPR and some AM station while on my way home from work today. I agree with rpmjr, there needs to be a way to keep the energy up during halftime (let people leave and come back? a football version of AK’s “Were BACK…” commercial?). Also, I feel I should admit that since I graduated, I have left every game early…but this will no longer be the case. Former players (maybe Dex and PWilly) coming out and trying to pump up the Rebel faithful is exactly what we need.

Just a guess, but I bet there are at least 25-30 mins of commercials shown on the jumbotron. Personally, I believe this kills the atmosphere, especially pregame and after big plays. Unfortunately I don't think this message will reach its intended audience

As Romero admits, the people reading the Spirit (and of course the Cup) are most likely diehards that need no prompting to stay for an entire game. It’s the people that treat game days as a mere social event that really need to hear this, and obviously they’re not reading message boards and blogs.
Someone did mention trying to get this in the DM, which would make this message a lot more useful.

p.s. anyone remember that trick play where Deuce threw Romero a touchdown pass? FUCKING AWESOME!

This was what I was thinking too.

And I don’t think even the DM will reach a lot of people who need to read it. There are students who leave early to go get drunk, but there are still plenty of them who make a lot of noise too. I know, I sat there for 3 seasons, they have their share of rowdy noisemakers. It’s the old geezers in some of the alumni/general fan sections who need to read this, and most of them will never see it in the DM. They’ll still just gripe if someone happens to shake the seat they’re on a little too much cheering. After Hotty Toddy they’ll never say another word above 50 decibels.

And yes that Egg Bowl TD was great.

Another problem is some of our fans will simply balk at Romaro's message

I emailed the letter to all my Ole Miss friends last night and one of them called me this morning. He thought it was b.s. that Ro “blamed the fans” on us losing to Vandy and JSU. While I agreed he should have left that part out of the letter (as far as claiming we’d have won those games with better fan support), I told him the rest of it was spot on and that our fans do, indeed, suck.

Well considering sports in in the BACK of the paper....

Just so you know, we can’t move ads. People pay for them and they are placed according to size and how many other ads will be in the paper that day. Where they go is where they stay.

Running an editorial column isn’t acceptable for a front page story. However, most people that read the DM glance at the first page and promptly flip it over to read the Sports on the back. I can assure you Romaro’s letter has been seen by everyone who has picked it up today and by plenty more alumni/parents etc who log on to the website (the story is featured on the home page) or download the pdf.

…on emails today with some die-hard Ole Miss fans. I had contemplated not writing anything on here and only discussing with some of my friends. I sympathized with Romaro and everyone on here when one of the guys on the email brought up a good point.

Instead of the die-hards and the crazies (i.e. El Copa Rojo/Spirit, etc.) “pointing fingers” or asking what can everyone else do, what can we do better as the “leaders” of the crowd? I realize it’s hard for people to play the role of Moses and get everyone exodus’d out in time for kickoff, but could we be louder, bring friends, stay the whole time. Could we write suggestions to the Athletic Department, or the Band and ask them to play different songs? I think that it’s silly for us not to continue Chucky’s words and say, “It’s Time!” before kickoff. Do it before the Hotty Toddy. Whatever it takes.
