Road Trip to Oxford

Long story short, every year we go on a couple of road trips to premier college football venues (one thing we lack here in AZ) and this year it was my pick and of course I picked Oxford.

Just looking for some help in making sure we get the true Grove Experience and greatly appreciate any help experts could provide.

How does one reserve a spot in the Grove? Reservations or 1st come 1st serve?

Even if we aren't able to get a "spot" (if they are reserved for boosters, alumni, etc.) is it still fun to just walk around?

When do the festivities begin? We have been to some places that are dead on Friday night but others that are insane.

Which hotels would you recommend? Proximity to the stadium and establishments for post game being the highest priority.

Is flying into Jackson the best route? Then drive time from Jackson to Oxford is about 2 hours, correct?

Unfortunately we won't be there for a conference game but still expect the atmosphere to be good for the Fresno St game.

Once again thanks for any help and/or suggestions. If it matters with the advice our group is made up of guys 25 - 35 with a 50/50 mix of single and married guys.

This post is a Red Cup Rebellion FanPost. Please don't sue us.

I can't promise to hit all your questions but I'll try.

First of all, this will help: http://www.olemiss.edu/gameday/tailgating.htm

The Grove is a first-come-first served. That being said, “first-come” is usually the night before (10 pm according to the website), and often they are spots where a certain group or family has tailgated for YEARS. They now even hire companies to come and set up their tents for them. Which reminds me, it’s not really a true “tailgate” in that there are no vehicles allowed on the Grove itself (they tore up the grass, killed some of the oaks and once they put in the irrigation system in 1990 or so that was it). It’s a SEA of tents.

Walking around is allowed and encouraged and is SO fun. It might be nice to hook up with some folks beforehand so you have an invite to at least ONE tent. RCR has a tent most games, I think.

Like I said above, Grove opens at 10 pm Friday but what you REALLY want is to hit the Square and barhop. Bars are open til one on Friday nights (last call is usually around 12:35), midnight on Saturdays (because at 12:00 am it’s Sunday, and that’s for the Lord [rolleyes]). Somewhere in the archives is a list of bar and restaurant recommendations but I’m too lazy to look it up.

Usually I’d say forget getting a hotel room in Oxford but IDK, Fresno St. you might luck out. My parents live in Oxford so I always have a place to stay…I’m the WRONG person to ask (BTW, I’m sure you’re a great person but no you can’t stay at my parents’ house).

I guess everyone flies into Jackson because of Southwest, but honestly Memphis is WAY closer, less than an hour and a half away (Jackson is more like two and a half). The only caveat…you have to drive through Memphis.

Well that’s all I got. In short, Grove is fun and doesn’t need a reservation, but nice to have at least ONE tent to go to. Friday bar scene is sick (don’t know your age so I feel I have to emphasize “sick” in a GOOD way). Hotels: can’t help you. Oh, and Memphis is closer. Good luck!

For hotels I would try and get the Inn at Ole Miss.

Its a little pricey at $99 a room, but it is also on campus and right next to the Grove almost. That makes it extremely convenient. The other hotel I would suggest is the Comfort Inn on Jackson Avenue. The key though is to get reservations as soon as possible, because they fill up quick for game-days. And you don’t really have to drive through much of Memphis from the airport since it is right off of I-240/55 and is an easy hitch down to Batesville to get onto 6 to go to Oxford. RCR does have a tent most games, and if they don’t I should have a tent that you can call a temporary home for game-day. The Grove is definitely amazing though and you will enjoy just look at all the tents and setups if that is all you end up doing. If you have any other questions just ask.

Thanks for the correction.

I thought there was debate last year about later bar hours (plus Sunday sales) but now I remember it was trying to get bars to stay open til 2 or later on game nights. Would have come in handy after that 7-overtime Arkansas game.

I agree about the best way being to fly into Memphis

And if you’re particularly clever, you don’t have to do that much driving through Memphis itself. You can sneak down Airways Blvd. pretty much to Hernando, hop on I-55 from there and you’re set.

You picked the right school

because Oxford / Ole Miss is the greatest place on earth, in my deeply biased opinion.

Queen is right about Memphis, it’s over an hour closer to Oxford. You should fly at least the night before though, because trying to drive into Oxford on Saturday is awful. It’s a logjam.

And you might look into hiring someone from a website to set up a tent for you if you really want a spot (somoene else on this site can help you with that, we’ve always set up our own), but if you don’t end up with one it’s no problem. You will have an amazing time walking around and taking in the sights and culture in the Grove.

A couple of rules you should know about regarding the Grove: It’s a brown bag atmosphere. The rules are strange though. Liquor is allowed if you keep it in a cup and the bottle hidden from view. Honestly. I suggest bringing a few red solo cups (to fit in, of course), and bourbon or whiskey with coke. It’ll put you in the right state of mind, and that’s also what about 70% of what everyone else is drinking. The thing is, beer is illegal in the Grove, which is actually fine because you don’t want to be running to the bathroom every couple of minutes. Liquor is easier to carry if you don’t have a tent to reside under. Bring a cooler.

Hotel rooms – Jalakin is right too. But this late in the game, take what you can get. If the Inn at Ole Miss has any rooms left, snatch them up now.

Ok, now for Friday night/post game: The Square is the place to go. Best bars – Rooster’s Blues Bar, City Grocery (balcony), Rib Cage, Downtown Grill, and Proud Larry’s (if you don’t mind paying a cover.) These bars also have good food.

As far as food in Oxford goes, if you want a nice meal, City Grocery, Downtown Grill, Snackbar, or Waltz. All are on the Square. Rib Cage and Abner’s are also delicious and sell bbq and chicken respectively. Phillips Grocery down South Lamar sells one of the best burgers you will ever eat and it’s byob. Last but not least (and I am not joking in the slightest), if you are on the Square late on Friday or Saturday night, go to the Chevron on the corner of South Lamar and University Avenue and get chicken-on-a-stick (I also suggest the pizza sticks, egg rolls and tater logs).

Since the Fresno State game is in late September, it should have started to cool off in Mississippi, but the humidity will still be there, so prepare for that. Hope y’all have a good time.

I play for keeps.

Thanks it is exactly the type of thing I was looking for and will really help the trip.

I know we can’t wait to get to Oxford as I never heard anyone say it was anything short of spectacular. Thus, I’m starting the research 8 weeks before the trip.

by Augie's Army on Aug 6, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

You won't

be able to get in the Inn at Ole Miss on a football weekend and most local hotels run $200 to $250 a night and require a 2 night stay. I can tell the Queen hasn’t stayed in a hotel there in a while for football. Good thing you have Momma’s house Queen. I wish $99 was still a good rate. As far as I know the “official” grove opening time has not been set but I think the 10:00PM is going to be about right. Opened at 6 last year and the traffic interfered with classes. People will be in the Grove saving spots from about 2:00 to 3:00 on Friday. Trust me I do it every football Friday. We’ve had the same spot for 6-7 years. Send me your email and I’ll send you a map to our tent so you can come by.

If you show up at 10:00 you may be able to get a spot due to it being a non-conference game but you never know.

Can’t help you with the night life since I’m an old guy buy do look at flying to Memphis. It will save a good hour to two going and coming.

Find

a friendly tent and stash it. Don’t carry it around.

Or bring a cooler you can carry over your shoulder

As far eats...

Two Stick offers amazing sushi (if you’re into that). Their spicy soft shell crab roll is awesome!

Red House has killer burgers too. I personally like the pizza burger which comes with marinara, provolone, parmesan cheese, and oregano.

My new favorite place is Irie, a Cajun/Caribbean place that offers the best seafood I’ve ever had besides coastal areas. Their coconut shrimp, crawfish, gumbo, and Jamaican jerk wings are all top notch.

The Rib Cage is a great place to try Memphis style BBQ.

Nagoya isn’t on the square, but if you’re big into Asian cuisine Nagoya is a great Hibachi restaurant.

It might be worth mentioning that the Bottle Tree Bakery has really good baked goods if you’re looking for some breakfast. They’ve been mentioned on the Food Network Channel more than once.

All of this is on the square except for Nagoya… I’m hungry now.

Some more food suggestions

Ajax Diner (on the western side of the Square) for southern food.
Talluah’s kitchen (on the eastern end of University Ave across from Kroger’s) for soul food sort of cheap.
Boure (on North Lamar near Square) for shrimp and grits.
Honey Bee bakery (in Belk Shopping center off of Jackson) has a great lunch, but it can take a while.
Blind Pig (on North Lamar very near Square) for sliders.
Taylor Grocery (middle of Taylor, get directions and get there early with your own adult beverages) for catfish and a unique dining experience.
Yocona in Exile (in Abbeville, get directions with your own bottle of wine) for a filet and a hot, but unique dining experience.

In general, if it’s a chain, avoid it while you’re in Oxford. There are a ton of great independent restaurants and you don’t want to waste a meal on Chili’s.

Sorry, I gotta plug a couple of places in Midtown.

Big Bad Breakfast: awesome cathead biscuits, Tabasco bacon and fresh preserves.
Volta: gyro wraps, pita pizzas and great hummus (and try the Hotty Toddy Balls…trust me)
Panini/Oxford Catering Co.: really good sandwiches plus homemade-and-frozen casseroles you can heat up quick for tailgating. And just checked their website and it turns out you can hire them to set up a tent and food at the Grove for you (but I’d bet anything they’re booked up).

I'm Going to Second Ajax

Good Southern food for not too much money and it has a laid-back atmosphere. Also not as hard to get into on game weekends as some of the more upscale places.

Don’t miss the shrimp & grits from either Boure’ or City Grocery.

by hotstove97 on Aug 7, 2010 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

A few things....

1. The bars stay open until 1 am on Saturdays of game weekends. (I guess God doesn’t mind as long as there’s a game in town…)

2. While technically true, the whole “liquor is legal in the Grove but beer isn’t” thing really doesn’t matter. Bring whatever libations you wish. Be it beer, liquor or otherwise. The bottom line is keep it in a cup and don’t walk through the Grove with a case of beer on your shoulder. Ice it down in your cooler before bringing it on campus.

3. Renting a house is THE way to go. I’d suggest jumping all over 18mph’s house if it’s really that close to the square. You could basically leave your car parked most of the weekend. Easy walk to the square and not a bad walk to the Grove/Stadium depending on what you’re carrying.

4. I highly recommend hiring a tent set-up company to get your spot in the Grove. You’ll want to maximize your time in Oxford Friday and you certainly don’t want to leave the square to go claim your stake Friday night. Some outfits offer full-service packages where they’ll provide food, coolers of beer, etc.

5. Another option is to simply make friends with some Rebels Friday and let them know you’re visitors in town to experience Ole Miss. This is a good way to secure a home base in the Grove without all the hassle. Hell, you can probably accomplish this right here on RCR.

6. A few food recommendations would be: 208, Snackbar, Waltz, City Grocery, Boure’, Taylor Grocery and Big Bad Breakfast. As for bars, just go to the square and explore. There are probably around 25 or so places on and around the square from which to choose.

HERE is a good place to find set-up companies and weekend house/condo rentals.

THIS is a good link for basic info on the restaurant/bar scene in Oxford – although it could stand to be updated.

John Currence is kind of responsible for really jumpstarting the food scene in town with City Grocery. He now has four restaurants and all are oustanding. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

I gotta say I don't understand the hate for Rib Cage

Sure it’s not spectacular, but I pretty much always have a good meal. Good kielbasa, good bbq (though admittedly not great), good cheese and sausage plate, cheap pitchers. I’m more a fan of the bar than the restaurant, but I like the restaurant too.

I play for keeps.

by bowtierebel on Aug 6, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not the worst in the world

But it’s one of the last places in Oxford I would recommend to an out of towner. You’re right about the kielbasa. It’s the best thing on the menu. I’m apparently not the only person unimpressed with the place, though. There is a reason the Rib Cage is the only restaurant on the square in which you can walk in and get a table immediately on a game weekend.

by ssmund on Aug 6, 2010 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

True

I imagine part of the appeal is the convenience of consistently available table-space.

One other thing

If you plan to have a nice dinner Friday or Saturday night, I’d do a little research, choose where you want to eat and book a reservation as soon as possible.

by ssmund on Aug 6, 2010 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Another decent place is Frank and Marlee’s. It’s general American standards, but most of the menu is named after Ole Miss related things (Landshark Burger etc). It’s a piano bar so its a slightly different atmosphere than other places in town, but the food is decent although it might be a bit crowded on a Friday. People like to hang out on the porch sipping cocktails.

I’m still pissed off about Smitty’s as well – thus no love for 208. Oxford’s got plenty of $50 a head places to eat but lacks hole-in-the-wall joints in which to nurse a hangover on Sunday mornings. Smitty’s biscuits and black coffee always did the trick for me.

It's not a bad drive to & from Memphis

Just make sure someone is sober enough to drive back, you could stay in southhaven, MS @ dreary inn right off the southhaven exit about 15-20 min closer and definately more safe than memphis, there is not a cheap hotel in downtown memphis ( actually there are a few but not safe) you can go downtown & party all nite on beale street or Midtown ( cooper yound neighborhood) which is only 15 min from downtown.

by hotstove97 on Aug 6, 2010 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

Or try and find somewhere in Batesville

which would only put you about 20 minutes away from Oxford.

by Jalakin on Aug 6, 2010 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

All the right answers....maybe

1. Set up tent night before (10pm) to reserve spot.

2. As neutral visitors, I would suggest not setting up a tent. Instead walk around and introduce yourself as road-trippers. You will be cared for.

3. Thursday @ 9-10pm, Friday @ 6pm, Saturday @6:30am

4. Either stay in Batesville or rent a house in Oxford. Just have a driver if you stay in Batesville.

5. Jackson is 2.5 hours. Memphis is about 1 hr. Up to you depending on price difference.

6. Fresno will be good atmosphere. Better is we’re 4-0 (should be) and Best if it’s a night game and we’re 4-0. Most are excited about Fresno because they are new to us.

7. Food – Some new places now, but I’ll list the old staples: Ajax (Southern – great sides), City Grocery (Shrimp & Grits), Old Taylor Grocery (A Must – Catfish & More), Phillips Grocery (Burgers), Handy Andy’s (BBQ & Burger plates) Abners (Grilled/Fried Chicken Tenders & Abners Sauce), Chevron Chicken on a Stick (post-bar food. I recommend the crispitos). Reserve or get there early for places in Bold.

Hope this helps. Message when it gets closer if you have more questions…

Old Taylor Grocery

I was surprised that it has taken this long for someone to mention it! Old Taylor has the BEST catfish and is an essential place to stop if you are trying to get the Mississippi experience. It is also brown bag which will be necessary when your fixin to wait an hour to be seated. (no reservations)

Has Dan Jones left yet?

by Muddy Waterloo on Aug 7, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't know if recommending Taylor

would be a good idea for folks that won’t know their way around the town, since you have to head to the boons to eat there. I guess it’s pretty easy to find though. Follow Old Taylor Road til it ends and turn left. And you’re right, best catfish and true Mississippi experience.

by bowtierebel on Aug 7, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't recommend Taylor Grocery

It’s good and unique, but overrated IMO as their is similarly solid catfish at several catfish houses around the state. Granted, for out of towners, Taylor would be a great catfish outing. But with the drive and the wait that’s unavoidable on game weekends, I’d recommend one of the many other places that are in town and you can get a reservation for (or at least experience the Square while you wait).

Old Taylor is so very worth visiting

but if you don’t want to deal with the 15 minute drive and the hour-plus wait, then try to go on Friday for a plate lunch. You get to see the place, great plate lunch for around $6 and can say you’ve been. I still suggest taking a cooler Friday night and waiting it out. Square doesn’t really start hopping until 9-10 anyway. Anything before that will be dinner-goers trying to get in and out.

by HaterOfAllThingsCrimsonAnd-OrTide-ish on Aug 8, 2010 1:37 AM EDT reply actions

Some gameday stuff.

About 2 hours before the game, the players will walk through the Grove starting at the Student Union and proceed south along a brick walkway. You’ll want to see this. It gets very crowded but I think it’s a really cool tradition.

About thirty minutes after that, the band will play in the Grove. This, too, is awesome.

Dress Code

Do not show up in a t shirt, you will be immediately recognized as an outsider. It’s hot, shorts are fine (but not jorts), khakis are better. If you are bringing a date, sundresses are standard fare. The reason why the Grove is such a big deal is because it’s a major social event, so most of us dress accordingly.

At the end of the day, everyone looks better sipping bourbon when they’re dressed for the occasion.

Disagree on this ponit as well.

Group of Pac-10 fans came for a game a couple of years ago and were given the royal treatment. They didn’t come decked out in their own team’s gear but did just enough to offer a subtle hint they were out of towners. I believe they consisted of Oregon, UCLA and USC fans. Think they wore ball caps or something.

I agree.

I actually remember hanging out with a couple of Ducks fans a couple of years ago. If they hadn’t been wearing green, I never would have heckled them about coming from a weak conference, and we never would have shared a drink and had a fun discussion.

If you are from any other SEC school, it is a different story. We likely don’t care for you. Or Ohio State. We’d probably heckle you to the point of tears about how the SEC makes you seem like the Buffalo Bills of college football.

Feel free to wear your school’s gear! Look forward to seeing you out there.

Really excited for the trip and looking forward to Masoli. Does it look like he is going to be the starter? I’ve seen him 5 times in person and a lot on tv. The kid can flat out play.

I don't

think anyone wearing ND, USC or some other schools attire would be well received. It depends on the school so this was a blanket statement that was the easy way to say what I was thinking. Forgive me.

You should forget about setting up a tent.

Coming from out of town, how exactly would you rent, buy, or borrow all the necessary tables, chairs, coolers, the tent itself, and all the other necessary pieces (place setting, serving dishes, etc)? I would back the suggestion that you should walk up and say, “Hotty Toddy Y’all, we aren’t from around here.” The drinks should flow and the homemade casseroles, finger foods, bbq, and otherwise incredible food should quickly find their way to your plate.

Southern hospitality finds its definition in the Grove. Anyone is up for giving you a beer or some food- frat guys (football talk), older people (make sure to say “Yes Ma’am” and Yes Sir"), and everyone in-between.

Go to City Grocery for dinner. After dinner, walk up stairs to the bar and find a bartender named Chip. This man is probably one of the best libationists in Oxford. I’d go for an Old Fashioned or just tell him you’d like a good bourbon on ice. He likes Rumplemintz shots so buy a round for him- it will go a long way.

Enjoy, I’d give anything to be able to make a game in Oxford this year.

As the Mrs. to a contributor of this fine blog,

I would like to extend an invitation to you and your friends to stop by our tent, essentially the RCR tent on gameday. The Mr. will message you to explain where to find us.

After

making a trip to Taylor’s Grocery this weekend I would like to voice my opinion that you should make the effort to go there on Friday night. There are many fine places to eat in Oxford but none offer an experience like Taylor’s Grocery. All the others will be similar to places you have wherever you are from but it is doubtful that you have a Taylor’s Grocery. You will have to wait but the nightlife doesn’t start early in Oxford and you can use the brown bag experience to get ready for a night on the square.

I would also like to invite your group to drop by our tent. We are easy to find on the Walk of Champions. We are mainly old people so probably not as much fun as some of the other groups but maybe a good spot prior to the walk through the Grove. RCR has my permission to give you my email if you would like to have it.
