Will The cowbell die this year? One can hope right?
This year a new NCAA rule is in effect thanks in part to TSDS and their dinner bell AKA The Cowbell. Ok lets face it this rule was made especially because of state fans. I for one love the idea that they will be fined for every illicit clang of that god awful bell. First offense: $5,000, 2nd: $25,000 and 3rd offense has a hefty $50,000 price tag. That is an expensive home field advantage to have. One that hopefully will bankrupt the university after the hundreds of millions in fines that the rule is sure to bring, and that's just going to be this year. I know any university fan-base would be hard pressed to hold their bells to themselves when there is nothing keeping their attention but we are talking about state fans, drunk state fans to be exact. If I had to bet on it I would put my money on state getting at least a million in fines on the first game of the year. Egg bowl fine prediction: whats the state GDP? That's probably what it will amount to. Like Christopher Walken said on SNL "I need more Cowbell". Next time we go to Starkvegas for an Egg Bowl lets bring a few bells with us.

I think....
You are crazy to believe that they may actually get more than a single 5,000 fine this year. It will be done once to appease Urban/Nicky, but once only.
If you read the actual fine policy
The fines are per game not per offense. Therefore the maximum they could be fined is $130,000 this season and $200,000 next season. This is not as heavy a fine structure as I was hoping for, I was hoping the fines would be per offense with not cap. But alas my hopes are crushed.
Not sure
Where you are getting your info but the way they explained it on css the other day was that the fine would be levied every time the rule is broken for every illicit ringing.
This is where I got it:
http://blogs.clarionledger.com/msu/2010/08/18/cowbell-fine-structure-implemented/
Specifically where it says
The fines will be per game where a violation or violations were deemed to occur, not per violation. The fine structure will be capped at $50,000, and it’ll reset itself if a school goes three years without violating it. (Though artificial noisemakers are of paramount interest to MSU fans, the fine structure is in place for schools that violate when sound can be played through speakers, too.)
It is disappointing that the SEC allowed it to be per game.
Ok I didnt see this
the article makes sense. Its a good clarification. thanks for the link. Ive lived in MS most of my life and im not really annoyed by the noise. I’m mostly indifferent on the enforcement of this rule. I like the idea that a team can actually have an advantage at home.
Im only annoyed because I spent my college years in the band.
So every time we went to the Egg Bowl in Starkville there were hundreds of cowbells rung in my face by extremely annoying State fans. Its fine to have them as a tradition and be proud of it, but be respectful and keep it out of my face.
Cowbells aren't going anywhere.
They’ll get a few slaps on the wrists here and there, but nothing crazy’s gonna happen.

The SEC won't do anything.
At least I have to see it to believe it. The ban was put in place in 1974 if I remember correctly. Has MSU ever once been penalized in any way for cowbells? I specifically remember several years ago when the SEC said they’d instructed their referees to flag MSU every time the cowbells got very loud. The very next game was on national TV, I believe a Thurs. night game so everyone saw it. The announcers made a huge deal out of it. Of course the cowbells were ringing before the opening kickoff. And they kept ringing. And not one single penalty was called the entire game. That was the moment I realized the SEC will never do anything about it.
Maybe they’ll prove me wrong. But they’ve had over 30 years to get it right and haven’t done it yet. So why should we expect it now?
I agree. I don't expect the fine to be excercised even once.

come on guys...
MSU has very little to brag about..give em something…Taking away their cowbell would leave them with what exactly?

Seriously, I’ve heard that mentioned before. It’s in the bookstore.
Somebody did once.
I can’t remember but I’ve heard it from a couple of people. Clay Travis mentions it in his book that he wrote going to all the SEC schools as well but I’ve heard it other places too. Apparently somebody’s proud of it.
If they get fined often...
It might be worth it to buy tickets to their home games and ring the cowbells. Fine them for the helluvit.
