Rebel Roundup - 8/12/10

22 Days...

No Practice Report?!
Yeah, sorry, EtOHReb was busy with something. If you were there and would like to write one, though, we'll frontpage it for sure. Otherwise, just use the comments of this here Roundup to share your observations.

College Football Predictions: Ole Miss with Jeremiah Masoli at QB | Doc's Sports Service
T.O. Whenham looks at a few reasons why he feels Jeremiah Masoli will be a good fit for Ole Miss. Namely, he writes about how Masoli's been a high-profile guy before, could instill confidence in his new teammates, and has an easy early schedule to get acclimated to SEC ball. That, and "he's a thug dope smoker from San Fran ha TSUN prfect fit for Nuttless certified dirty lul."

Ole Miss' Powe leads list of top SEC senior prospects | CBSSports.com
In a list which includes Kelvin Sheppard, Terrance Toliver, Pernell McPhee, Mike Pouncey, and others, Jerrell Powe comes out on top of the heap amongst senior SEC athletes bound for the NFL - even though he's only kinda sorta technically a senior.

Ravens: For offensive tackle Michael Oher, it's all football, all the time | Baltimoresun.com
Michael Oher has been moved from right tackle for the Baltimore Ravens to the position he made famous: left tackle. And he doesn't seem to phase him or his coaching staff any. The guy's ready.

Ole Miss Diamond Girls Set Up Help Fund for Taylor Hashman | Naples Daily News

Hashman is still at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis and recently had his condition upgraded from critical to serious. I was there yesterday...

…but I don’t have the football intelligence to make a report like EtOH’s. But I did notice that:

Breaux and Grandy are the most impressive receivers we have. Summers is catching alot, too. Melvin Harris has a lot of good opportunities, but drops a lot of balls. Vincent Sanders dropped every ball I saw go his way.

Stanley and Mackey had better plays in the scrimmage (except the center/qb exchange was horrendous when Mackey was in), but Masoli made a run through the tackles, spinning around a LB, and got about 20 yds. He’s faster than he lets on.

Jeff Scott got at least 10 yds on every play that I saw. They gave him the ball a good bit, too. Bolden showed some real agility, too. He juked several defenders on one particular run and ran from the 20 yd line to the opposing end zone. Nick Parker had a good run too.

On several plays, the D-Line was in the backfield as soon as the ball was snapped. All three QBs were sacked at least once. I don’t know if this says good things about the D-Line or bad things about the O-Line.

They ran a trick play where Stanley handed the ball of to Grandy on a sweep to the left. Stanley then ran to the right side of the field, and Grandy threw the ball back to Stanley. He threw the ball a good 5 yds over Stanley’s head, but it was still an exciting play. Grandy could at least throw a good spiral.

Terrell Brown dwarfs everyone else on the field. I saw him standing next to Matt Hall, and Hall looked a lot smaller. Anyway, he’s slow and not very physical. He keeps his feet planted, and the defenders get by him pretty easily.

I did see in the one-on-one drills where Lawon Scott tried to get by Brown, and Brown grabbed Scott’s arm and threw him down as if he were a small child.

That’s all I really recall.

This makes me wonder...

Speed and technique are a huge part of playing O-line and take a while to develop. It sounds like he has raw strength that will be a good foundation to make a D-lineman out of him. Has this been discussed and is there any indication that he might switch sides?

Watching that video of Dex ...

I could hear Verne Lundquist say, “WOW!”
