About this McCluster guy...oh yeah and Lewis?
Hey guys Chiefs fan here. I was just wondering if you guys would fill me out on Dexter McCluster. Ive seen highlights but I dont get to follow college football as closely as I would like...The Chiefs are planning on using him as a WR and he gets to keep his number 22.
Whats his strengths and weaknesses and what do you think he will bring to my Chiefs???
Thanks for any info guys!
Oh yeah and how about Kendrick Lewis? Any info on him?

Red Cup Rebellion -- Changing the Culture of Ole Miss Athletics

Yeah..
Here is my take, but keep in mind I am an Ole Miss fan, so this will be somewhat biased.
He is, first and foremost, a great kid. People (and teammates) like and respect him. He seems to have matured a good bit over his last two years in Oxford and really come into his own. I think he will end up being a great locker room guy (don’t let me down Dex…).
He is also a very hard worker- which I think will be his best attribute for continued success in the league. He is only going to improve. He wants to be great, and has shown a willingness to work hard enough to get there.
As for the on-field stuff, I will try to list some pertinent positive/negative skills.
He is incredibly fast, especially in game situations. Much was made about his forty time at the combine, but I assure he is faster than a 4.5 forty. You really can’t appreciate how fast he is on the field until you see him live. He changes directions quickly and has great vision. He is relatively sure-handed when it comes to catching passes.
As for negative stuff, he has a few things that should be worked on. He had some fumbling issues, especially earlier in his career. He improved this as his career went on, but still could use some work. I think his biggest problem is that he is small. He is fearless, but it will be interesting to see how he holds up taking hits from NFL talent. I don’t doubt him one bit, but time will tell.
You guys are getting a great player. I didn’t exactly understand the pick, since you already have Jamaal Charles (a similar player in my opinion). I hope they are able to use him somewhat like the Vikings used Harvin this year- put him in the slot, backfield, etc.
You just made me real excited to have him as a Chief
This post is linked to the front page of Arrowhead with a part of your comment on it so some AP guys may be coming over to ask some questions.

What's funny about Kendrick is that
two seasons ago he was the worst tackler on our defense. This last season though, he gained great consistency and had, by far, the best hands in the secondary (we recruited him to play wideout). He is nowhere close to a heavy hitter but he is sound fundamentally and has a nose for the ball. He also has good range and is fairly agile.

Kendrick Lewis also
saved our special teams on kick off and punt returns. I can think of at least three times he personally saved touchdowns on special teams last year.

thanks Juco
both good write ups. Hopefully Lewis is a developed tackler now because when he does see the field for us we are going to need him to make the stop. Our secondary to many times last year and the year before couldnt make the stop. Love the McCluster writeup, lighting in a bottle.
Anyone else have any good nicknames these guys had while at Ole Miss?
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
Hey Jrcnc
did you when someone on AP said…"When McCluster makes a big play can we say they just got McClusterfu**ed? haha I love it!
I'm surprised that didn't surface while he was here.
I'm a Rebel, but I bleed the cherry and silver of the Lobos.
It did.
Some folks called our version of the wildcat “The McClusterfuck.”

We've adopted that in a different connotation
Whenever McCluster breaks an ankle we’ll say “you just got McClusterfucked”

yea i saw that one!
we are going to have several awesome nicknames for the guy. Ive already seen Run DMC posted alot on AP

HOLY CRAP I JUST PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER
Y’all drafted Eric Berry as well. So in Berry you’ve got the heavy hitter guy who can play close to the box and with Lewis you’ve got the rangy guy who can hound the deep ball.
Truly good draft strategy, KC.

thanks for the writeup bball. Hopefully we use McCluster and Charles in tandem. McCluster is going to be a weapon on the field for the Chiefs so I would hope you all watch us a little next year and stay up on your boys McCluster and Lewis. Thanks again for the info, cant wait to see both of them in red and gold for years to come!

I think one of my favorite quotes
regarding Dexter was an ESPN sportscaster during one of the games commenting that he was the only guy in college football that you could play two-hand tag against in a phone booth and always lose.
This should say everything you ever need to know about Dexter:

Thanks guys
Chiefs fan here… Really just wanted to say thanks for the warm welcome over here. I am extremely excited about having these two on board with us this year.
However I did have a curious question to follow… I know its been linked that Dexter and Kendrick were roommates at one point? Any good “inside” stories on their relationship and how it applies on the field? It’s hard to really know what a player is like first off when there’s hardly anything to go off of except highlights of them making spectacular plays…or because of the plain fact that you can’t catch them. Heh..
good question ahuts
I was wondering the same thing seeing as how we drafted alot of captains. Seems like these two were leaders both on and off the field, anyone here have any good info about them in that aspect?
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
EVERYBODY loves Dexter.
And I mean EVERYBODY. Anybody who has met him will surely attest to the fact that he’s a soft spoken, polite guy who, for a 22-year-old, is very mature. I think his pleasant demeanor and his hard work on the field earned him a captain spot.
Lewis most certainly got a captain spot due to his experience (he started for us at safety for 33 games) in the secondary. I never met him and don’t know what kind of a person he was off of the field, but I can’t recall him ever getting in trouble around town or anything like that.

Like Ghost said below..
EVERYONE that meets Dex loves the guy- period. I tried to mention that in my original post above. He is one of the most mature and grounded 22-year-old kids you will ever meet. Many college atheletes are some of the most spoiled, degenerate human beings you could ever meet (I know that is painting with a wide brush and sounds harsh, but it is true). These problems only get worse when they make it to the show and get millions of dollars poured in their lap. With Dex, I think the opposite will be true. He is the type that will want to work hard to prove he is worth the investment the team made. He is a special kid. I echo what someone else has said in this thread too- I believe he would make a big impact no matter what he ended up doing with his life.
On another note, Berry is a stud, and I thought you guys got the best value in the draft when you took him fourth. (At least, I think you took him fourth)
Never mind...
Ghost’s post is ABOVE mine, not below. Reply fail….
I don't about this roommate rumor, but I have personally spoken to Dex on a couple of occasions.
He wouldn’t know me from Adam, but there were more than a few mornings (around 8am) when I left my office to get coffee and he was walking across campus. A couple of those times, I told him what I thought of his play. The first time, he politely said, “thanks, I really appreciate.” The second time, I asked how he felt about the upcoming weekend’s game after I complimented him. That spurred a discussion about how much he had been working that week. He mentioned how much he wanted the ball, but what stood out to me was that he mentioned that he still had schoolwork to do. It wasn’t as if the schoolwork was a drag either – he was focused and thankful for what was going on in his life. Ya, he enjoyed the attention, but I really think he believes that his talent is a gift. He knows that he might not play but one more time. It would kill him inside because he loves the game, but I think he’d still find a way to make an impact somewhere else.
I know this doesn’t give you much as far as stories and evidence of his character, but he is a “great guy.” I’ll be sad not to have him around campus.
I'm a Rebel, but I bleed the cherry and silver of the Lobos.
awesome
I love to hear that stuff. Players in Kansas City are always involved in the community one way or the other so hopefully he gives some of his down time back to the city that drafted him! Sounds like he is going to stick here in KC.
Are we the team to beat in 2010? I sure think so! Go Chiefs.
Dexter's love for the game.
Excellent point there. He is one of those guys who you can tell truly just loves the sport of football.

Thanks Again
For the invite and all the info. Also thanks for two new players, let’s hope they help build a great Chiefs dynasty :)
Here's a speed question from another AP member
Watching his highlight videos he’s obviously the quickest guy on the field, but his top end speed looks ridiculous. It’s like he’s a sports car shifting into sixth gear; he’s blowing everybody away and then gets faster. Is this a result of others giving up on the play, or is he really just a freak at top end speed?
I think he changes direction so fast that
his would be tacklers get tripped up or slow down enough to give Dex the wiggle room he needs to break free.

Tough question...
At times, it seems like Dex can be caught from behind. Certainly, his forte isn’t top-end speed, it’s his combination of ridiculous agility, acceleration, and low center of gravity. He’s able to cut the corner, even against great defenders, because he is able to accelerate extremely quickly while turning upfield.
Looking back at some of his best runs, it seems like some guys look like they might catch him, but then he hits his top gear. Some guys just run faster when they know it’s a race.
Love the play-by-play on that one.
by Whiskey Wednesday on Apr 27, 2010 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Thats a good question
for Eric Berry to answer. During the Tennessee game Dexter made some great runs and was close to being caught by Eric Berry on one such run and just hit a completely different gear to get the job done. So he is certainly capable of hitting a freakish level of speed, but his forte is making cuts so well that it makes the other players look like statues.
you know, i was wondering about this...
when dex and berry finally meet on the KC practice field, with the latter just burst into flames and get it over with after what happened last season?

Hey tomahawk 44.
forget about the size, the label tweener, etc., I watched this kid for 4 years at Ole miss, and you’re getting a hell of a football player. period. A gamebreaker. A team player. A guy with huge heart. I could go on and on. You’re gonna be tickled to death very shortly that KC picked Dexter. We are sure gonna miss him in Oxford.
KC fans, youtube Dexter McCluster's Testimony
Not trying to push religion or anything, but this is a great vid to watch if you want to get an idea of the passion Dex has for all things:
Watch the Ole Miss - Tennessee game...
Nov. 14, 2009. The entire game is virtually a McCluster highlight film – he had 324 yards, 280 something rushing. Here’s a link to the SEC website, and maybe it will take you as far as the Ole Miss video archives: http://www.secdigitalnetwork.com/video/mississippi.aspx
If not, click on “video” on the top of the page, select “Ole Miss videos” and just scroll down until you come to this “Gridiron Classic.” The whole game is there and is worth the watch.
Eschew obfuscation.
my favorite non-alabama game of the 2009 season... by far

The best part about Dex that hasn't been said yet, at least I don't think..
Is how he always talks about how much he loves Oxford, Ole Miss, and the fans. I know he’ll have the same thing to say about Kansas City, their fans, and the team. Usually, kids get recruited into a place and just stay around long enough to get their money from the pros, but I genuinely feel like Dexter would’ve stayed and played for us forever.
I'm definitely biased in favor of Ole Miss....
Bias notwithstanding, I’ve heard from more than one credible person that Dex frequently stopped by the nursery school on campus to hang out with the kids, and he stops and spends a little time with them if he sees them anywhere else. I can’t say I know Dex, but everyone I’ve talked to that actually interacted with him says he is the kind of guy who goes out of his way to be a part of the community. It probably sounds too good to be true, but I think y’all made a wise choice in drafting him. He’s obviously talented, but he has the character to go with it. Dex is a gamechanger. He’s going to go all-out for y’all and he’s a genuinely good guy.
Lil Dex!
Chiefs Fans! You are soooo lucky to get Lil Dex! What a fine man, with the biggest of hearts! He survived the Orgeron days, and I never felt that a game was out of reach as long as Dex was there. He is a playmaker – and a crowd favorite. I was so excited to see that he was drafted. I look forward to seeing what he can do with the Chiefs – and will be watching Kendrick Lewis, too. Best of luck for a great 2010 season. Will be cheering for your Chiefs with the Ole Miss flavor. HOTTY TODDY! and Go Chiefs! or whatever ya’ll say!
