The Gin, a favorite watering hole among Ole Miss alumni and fans of a certain age, burned down tonight (March 6, 2010) after years of vacancy and disrepair. The end of an era, folks.

just saw this on the RCR and Godfrey twitter

…in its heyday. Yeah, I’m sure I sound like one of the old-timers (why, when I was your age I had to call my friends on a landline before I even left the house to be sure we met at the right bar), but it really WAS an awesome place. My sister and her friends watched the flames from the water tower tonight, poured out a little in memoriam. www.oxfordeagle.com and www.thelocalvoice.com will have more details as they come, and my Facebook news feed will be filled with drunken memories and half-truths tonight.

Amazing how
vacant buildings suddenly burn down. I’m sure they had insurance…

Hey now...
…can some of us have just a little mourning for another symbol of our childhood lost? Thanks.
(but I gotta admit it looked kinda cool)
And from what I’ve heard the property HAD been purchased recently and they were in the process of tearing down the patio that adjoined it with Frank and Marlee’s (old Murph’s…good thing or it would have spread). Rumor was they were going to reopen but theres NO way with that building in the shape it was in. I always said it wasn’t a matter of IF they’d turn over the lot to condos but WHEN.

Fire.
It’s the quickest and cheapest way to get rid of any building you want to get rid of. Costs lots of money to pay a crew to dismantle and remove a building. Much cheaper to pay 1 person to sit on a tractor all day dumping debris in the back of a truck. Now of course I’m not saying that’s what happened in this particular case, but you know…

It took two weeks to find another place to live.
You just can’t find that kind of space and memories for free anymore.
It appears everything is changing. Even the natural habitat for old Rebels.
