Around SBN: The Pros and Cons of an 18-game NFL Schedule

From the New York Times comes this excerpt from a statement released by Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm is flattered that our Star Wars fans at the University of Mississippi are considering electing Admiral Ackbar as their mascot. The last time we checked in with Admiral Ackbar he was leading the Rebel Alliance Fleet on a critical mission so it will be difficult for him to show up for the games!

Alright, George. We know you came up with Jar Jar Binks and all, but you don't have to talk to everybody like they're four.

Wait...

…if he’s “leading the Rebel Alliance on a critical mission” and it will therefore “be difficult for him to show up at the games”, isn’t that them saying “nope”?

Wait a minute...

Okay...

So over the past week, the creators of both Lost and Star Wars have commented on the Ole Miss mascot search. That is extremely satisfying to my inner nerd.

Fun and cool idea, yes.

But you know I don’t see Ole Miss agreeing to share a percentage of their merchandise sales with Lucas Films. Anything and everything that ends up with an Admiral Ackbar Ole Miss logo on it, will mean a check Ole Miss has to write out to Lucas Films. I’ve enjoyed the Ackbar stuff but it’s time to move on to serious suggestions before the students actually start believing Ackbar is an option – THAT is a trap.

I'm not here to be liked by strangers, I'm here for Ole Miss. If you don't like what I post, go tell it to someone that gives a shit. Thanks.

Agreed.

It was an awesome idea and we got a lot of good, free publicity. Now it’s time to get real.

But that said, I still expect to see some Ackbar masks at VHS this year.

No reason to stop pushing until something better comes along.

I don’t won’t fucking bruiser reb as my mascot.

How could we possibly do better?
Just sayin’.

I fear...

…that whatever we ultimately come up with will be much less satisfying than our old mascot and the joke mascot we came up with to make ourselves feel better about it.

There's a darkness on the edge of town.

by Evil Betty on Feb 26, 2010 11:05 PM EST reply actions

No doubt.

Col Reb is tradition. Admiral Ackbar is clever on many levels.
The replacement has to be PC enough to satisfy the masses, and has to represent our school in a way that doesn’t make sense with our nickname “The rebels”

What are the chances that the new mascot fulfills these needs better than Admiral Ackbar?

He’ll be just as gay, but not nearly as funny.
Which makes him a lot more gay.

No offense, BimBam.

Oh, didn't you hear?

It’ll cause the heavens to split wide open and shit will start raining down if we discuss my sexuality. Besides, you’re saying Colonel Reb was gay? I mean, you asked who better than Admiral Ackbar because he’ll be just as gay.. I’m assuming you mean just as gay as Colonel Reb.. and let me tell you, I did not have sexual relations with that Colonel.

On another note, I know one person who is against Ackbar. From Facebook:

Bradley Sowell: really hopes this admiral ackbar shit is a joke, that would be a disgrace to Ole Miss…

I’d like to tell him, “Ummm, no Bradley, your blocking is a disgrace to Ole Miss. Worry about that.”

johnny reb

Ole Miss has a tradition of commitment, honor and valor to the state of Mississippi. The entire class of 1863 proved that with their enlistment in the confederate army. Maybe the civil war was questionable, but there was no question as to the dedication of the class of 1863.

We should always be Rebels for a worthy cause, we should honor the class of 1863. We should have Johnny Reb as our mascot. A student dressed in confederate grey uniform with logos of Ole Miss, Rebels and 1863. No reminders of slavery, hate or oppression, just the reminder of what all Mississippian’s should be, ready to serve their state with the commitment of the class of 1863.

This is what we should hold as our tradition, our commitment to our state first and foremost.

Technically, LSU's "Tigers" are honoring Confederates as well.

http://www.collegefootballhistory.com/lsu/history.htm

This is what I’ve always known to be true and what I have been told from many LSU fans (who are very proud of their mascot being picked in honor of the Confederacy). Thus not making Ole Miss the ONLY school who “honors” their Confederate troops.

They also proudly wave their purple & gold rebel flags. They just don’t get on CNN every time someone does it. I spent a lot of time on campus at LSU because my best friend went there and it was just as bad as Ole Miss was about this “Southern heritage” stuff.

by Catfish Row on Feb 28, 2010 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

I never said I want to emulate LSU.

C’mon, Ghost, you should know from all of my comments in previous threads that I’m all for moving forward. Corndogs aren’t my thing nor are people wearing pimp suits in team colors in the student section.

Just correcting the statement that Ole Miss is the only one. We’re not.
